Starwood American Express Credit Card Offer for 30,000 SPG Points is Back!

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here. Additionally, some of the offers on this page may no longer be available through Deals We Like.

Update: This offer is now expired.

I just received an email from American Express that Starwood has bumped up their bonus offer from 25,000 to 30,000 SPG points for new applicants. From a quick look, it looks like you need to be referred by an existing Starwood AMEX card member to be eligible for the new offer. Offer expires August 22, 2011. Once I get the link I will update this post. Also, feel free to send me an email at dealswelike@gmail.com and I will send you a referral email immediately for your to apply for this great offer.

A similar offer was promoted last year for 30K, which I jumped on. Typically the offer is 25K and $15,000 spend to receive this bonus. Although last year you only needed to spend $1,500 to receive the bonus points, this offer is still pretty low in my opinion – $4,500 in 3 months. I personally love the Starwood card compared to the other hotel credit cards. You get 1 point for every dollar spent and the number of points needed to redeem is much lower than Marriott and Hilton. Starwood has some great category 4 and 5 properties out there where you need 10K and 12K respectively to get a free night. It then jumps to 20K for category 6 hotels (which can still be a great value internationally) and then an unreasonable amount for their category 7 hotels (their highest category). You also receive your 5th night free when redeeming at category 3-7 hotels. A huge benefit of SPG is that you can redeem a combination of cash and points at many hotels for a much better value. Click here to view the redemption options.

Additionally, if you prefer miles you can transfer to many airlines for a 1:1 ratio and get a 5K bonus for every 20K increments transferred over. There have also been times in the past where there is an additional bonus for transferring to miles, but I have not seen one in almost a year now.

Although Starwood properties are not as common as Marriott and Hilton, they have some of the top properties in the world. The value of this offer really depends on your redemption. For example, a friend of mine just redeemed at the Blue Palace Hotel in Crete, Greece which costs about $600/night (for a non-refundable room). With the Cash & Points redemption of $150 and 8K points/night, he receive a value of $.056/point. At that rate, 30K points is worth $1,680!  Feel free to comment with some of your best redemptions.

[…] Please PM me or email me at dealswelike@gmail.com if you'd like a referral. I personally think this is a great credit card and much better than any of the other hotel credit cards out there. As I love SPG hotels (they are some of the nicest ones out there), I use this card for my every day spend. I wrote more about my thoughts on the card, the benefits, T&C in my blog post here: http://boardingarea.com/dealsw…oints-is-back/ […]

[…] The SPG credit card many say is the best points/miles credit card in the industry, and I fully agree. Although 30K points for the bonus is not that much more than the normal 25K, they have reduced the spend to receive the bonus (which was high to start with). This is my go-to credit card for purchases. SPG points hold a lot of value and will get you much further than Hilton or Marriott. Also, with SPG points you can transfer to many airlines for a 1:1 ratio and if you transfer 20K you will receive an additional 5K bonus. Last year they also ran a promotion where you will receive a 35% bonus on all transfers. I wrote more about my thoughts on the card in my blog post here. […]

@Lisa – in the terms and conditions it states it is for new customers only. However, many people have been able to call and get a good will 5K points. Unfortunately, not many have had luck getting them to reduce the spend from 15K to 4.5K for the bonus points. Definately worth a phone call! Let me know the results.

Do you have the links to the referral site (for both Personal and Business)? AMEX and SPG don’t appear to want to cough them up (which makes no sense at all as they would be getting more card members).

@ Louis – As of right now AMEX/SPG is just promoting this promotion via existing card member referrals. Folks on FlyerTalk have been saying that the links should be available next week, but no idea. Seems as though it was a targetted referral for some odd reason.

I like the Starwood card, but I gotta tell you that we got the standard offer last year (I wasn’t paying attention). When I got it I thought we had the $5000=15,000 points offer, but apparently not. Now, we called to see what was up and it looks like we got the crappy $15,000-15,000 points “deal” which is ridiculously high for a personal card. Really Starwood, do you want middle range income people loading their card on average $2500/month (75% of credit limit)? Or do you really just like to not give out the bonus points.
