From time to time US Airways offers pretty lucrative bonus on purchasing, gifting, and transferring miles, and if you can jump on these offers the cost to purchase these points actually is worth it most of the time. This time, US Airways is giving you 10,000 bonus miles for every 10,000 miles you purchase or gift, up to a maximum bonus of 50,000 miles. This promotions run from August 8 thru September 15, 2011.
- Buy 10,000 – 19,000 miles = 10,000 bonus
- Buy 20,000 – 29,000 miles = 20,000 bonus
- Buy 30,000 – 39,000 miles = 30,000 bonus
- Buy 40,000 – 49,000 miles = 40,000 bonus
- Buy 50,000 miles = 50,000 bonus
Miles are sold for $0.0275 per mile plus a tax recovery charge of 7.5%. GST/HST will be charged to Canadian residents.
The last time a similar bonus was offered was in March. For example, I was able to just redeem miles on Continental for a flight to Bangkok where the cheapest purchase price was around $1,800 (amongst all airlines). On US Airways, a flight to Bangkok you would need to redeem 80,000 miles. During this promotion, you can purchase 40,000 miles (giving you 80,000 miles) for $1,100 (significantly less than purchasing the flight). Just keep in mind that redemption awards are based on availability and you win not earn miles.
The great thing about this promotion (and just US Airway points in general), is that they can be redeemed on partner airlines (Adria Airways, Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Blue1, BMI, Brussels Airlines, Continental Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EgyptAir, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, Swiss International Air Lines, TAM Airlines, TAP Portugal, Thai Airways International, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, Bahamasair, Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Jet, Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian).
If you have any air travel in the future, I highly recommend looking into this offer and seeing if purchasing points would be of value.
The one caveat is that US Airways accounts must be at least 12 days old in order to buy or receive gifted miles. If you currently do not have an account, make sure to create one now, and then you will be good to go to purchase these miles in 12 days.
