Marriott seems to be very content with offering the same promotion EVERY year as they just announced their Fall Megabonus promotion which will run from September 15, 2011 thru January 15, 2012. The one huge difference between this promotion and their current Spring promotion is that you MUST pay for your stay with a Visa credit card. This is actually the norm for their Fall Megabonus. This is a huge disadvantage for corporate travelers who are required to use their American Express corporate credit card.
You will need to sign into your account to see the targeted offer you received. Typically you can call Marriott (especially if you have status) and ask to switch to another promotion. If you do not see an offer listed, call Marriott Rewards (1-801-468-4000) and ask them about your Megabonus offer and if they can register you – this will typically trigger the promotion to appear in your account. You must register by October 31, 2011.
Typical offers are:
- 2 stays = 1 free night for a category 1 to 4 hotel (expires May 31, 2012). Limit of two free nights earned during the promotion.
- 2 stays = 5,000 points, up to 20,000 points (8 stays)
- 20 nights = 35,000 points; 25 nights earns additional 15,000 for a total of 50,000 points
- 15 nights = 25,000 points; 20 nights earns additional 15,000 for a total of 40,000 points
Overall, I am not a fan of the quarterly Megabonus promotions as they can at best get you 2 free nights at a category 5 hotel and that requires 25 nights during the promotional period. I actually typically always call and switch to the 2 stays = 1 free night at a category 1-4 hotel. I am usually always able to find somewhere to redeem a category 4 hotel. Also, typically during the same time frame other hotel chains have more lucrative promotions running, but we still have yet to see them (I will keep my fingers crossed!). I do appreciate, however, that Marriott typically runs their Megabonus one right after the other, so there is not too much lag time in between promotions.
And just a reminder – the current Megabonus promotion ends August 31st.
