For those of you that have accrued Southwest points and just have no usage for them, redeeming for gift cards just got better! Through December 15, you will receive a 20% discount when redeeming your Southwest Rapid Reward points for many gift cards through their site. I just took a look at it, and there are a slew of gift card options, ranging from travel, department stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc. The travel gift cards include: Hyatt, Marriott, The Ritz Carlton, Fairmont, Royal Caribbean, Avis, Budget, Alamo, and Hertz.

You still get the biggest bank for your buck when redeeming your Southwest Rapid Reward points for free travel, but this option is not too bad! Redemption rates are the following:

  • Southwest travel redemption: 60 points = $1 (always the case)
  • Southwest gift card redemption: 80 points = $1 (through December 15)

This means that you can now redeem your 50,000 points from the just released Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Card for $625 in gift cards (which would be $833 if redeemed on Southwest travel). Since you only need to make one purchase to receive the points (no minimum spend necessary), assuming you apply now and make a purchase soon, you should receive the points in time for this redemption. Also, when using your gift card on travel, there are no black out dates or capacity controls. The best part is you will still earn points with using your gift cards! Again, this will not get you a free flight to Europe, but $625 minimum from a credit card isn’t too bad. Read my post from last week detailing this new offer from Chase/Southwest. 1. Are you sure it is only through Decmber 15-

i am thinking of getting the card kust so I can get $625 of Bloomingdale gift cards – do not fly with Southwest anywhere – but for only $500 in cards – the $69 fee I will not bother.

  2. Thanks for the info-

I have both of those already!!

It is just i figured these $500+ promotions will run out some time – so get it while it lasts.

Those two are great for the flexibility in flights and I originally thought about SW since no spending requirement
but then I saw they really do not have great flights to where I go so I went with CITI for the flexibility-

Now I am thinking of getting it just for holiday shopping.

for $431 no way but $556 I’ll do it.

If I get the cards in a week and they close the statement say a week end of November will the points post at that first statement?

    • @Israel – Got it! I am not sure I would trust it. Many have reported (including myself and my mom) not being approved for the SW credit card right away. SInce you have other Chase cards you also might not get approved immediately and it might require a call or two – ultimately the chances are you will be approved. I have not altered my statement dates with Chase, but will they change the statement date that close to when you get the card in the mail? The good thing is that many others have reported that the points will go into your account 2-3 days after the statement close date. If you are able to get the statement close date by the first week in December then you should be good.
