Another 100% Bonus on Purchasing US Airways Miles

US Airways is offering another 100% bonus on all purchased miles December 1 – December 31, 2011. This is a pretty common promotion from US Airways, but unfortunately they recently raised the cost to purchase miles. Now, purchasing miles will be more costly than in the past and might alter your decision on this promotion. The other caveat is that you you can only earn a maximum of 40,000 bonus miles during this promotion.

Although there have been a few recent changes, this promotion might be a good (if not great!) deal for some of you. If you primarily redeem for domestic travel, chances are purchasing points will not never benefit you. However, if you typically fly international flights on business and first class, this could be a huge savings.

Typically, miles are sold for $0.035 per mile plus a tax recovery charge of 7.5%. With this promotion, each mile will cost you $0.0175. Since the cap is 40,000 miles, this promotion is limiting unless you already have US Airways miles in your account. You can, however, fly to Southeast Asia for 80,000 miles. Purchasing these 40,000 miles (plus the bonus 40,000) will cost you $1,400. Depending on the time frame you are looking at, you may or may not be able to get a flight for less than $1,400. I am going to Thailand over the holiday period and the purchase price was at least $1,700. Remember though, you will not earn miles when redeeming, so there is that opportunity cost as well.

The great thing about US Airway miles, is that they can be redeemed on many partner airlines, including: Adria Airways, Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Blue1, BMI, Brussels Airlines, Continental Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EgyptAir, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, Swiss International Air Lines, TAM Airlines, TAP Portugal, Thai Airways International, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, Bahamasair, Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Jet, Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian

The one caveat is that US Airways accounts must be at least 12 days old in order to buy or receive gifted miles. If you currently do not have an account, make sure to create one now, and then you will be good to go to purchase these miles in 12 days.

Thanks Mommy Points for passing along this promotion!

  1. Really enjoy the blog! Please keep up the great work. I’m also going to Thailand soon for the first time in January. Can you recommend any great hotel values in Bangkok or Chiang Mai? Cheers!

    • @Brad – Make sure to read my posts in late December/early January as they will be detailing my trip day to day! The aloft Bangkok is having some great rates at THB 2100, with taxes it is about $70. In Chiang Mai I am staying at the Le Meridien, but also heard the Chedi is amazing (although VERY expensive over the time frame I am going).
