Reminder: Make Sure to Register for Small Business Saturday!

During small business Saturday (Saturday November 26th) you can get a $25 statement credit when using a registered American Express credit card at participating small businesses in your local community (must spend $25+ with this Amex card). You can only receive one credit per American Express card, but there is no limit to the number of cards you can register. If you have multiple Amex cards and have an expensive purchase, have the local business split the charges amongst the various cards you have!

To be eligible, you must  first register for this promotion. I wrote about this promotion before, but want to remind you all to register-register-register! Do not forget as this is free money! If you are registering multiple cards, I would recommend using different email addresses (not sure this is necessary, but better safe then sorry).

To find out participating Small Businesses in your area, go to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page, click the + sign next to “See where you can shop to earn your $25 statement credit,” enter your zip code,  and click “Go.” This is a great way to support your local businesses while also getting something for free – a win-win situation!

I personally will be using my credit at a local restaurant that I love! Glad I already have my Saturday night dinner planned! Which local business will you be supported?

And just a side note… unfortunately, corporate cards are not eligible but all other American Express cards can be registered – another great advantage of an American Express points/miles earning credit card.

Love your blog. New reader here. 🙂

I did this last year and I think it said I could spend the money on any day, not just on SBS. Do you know if this year is the same or do we have to use the Amex card on that day to get credit?

@Benny – As far as I am concerned the statement credit will appear only on a purchase from Saturday November 26th. The FedEx American Express gift card, however, MIGHT be able to be used any day. I have yet to use mine.

does this work for my wife’s card if it is under my account (two cards, but same bill)? i have not been able to clarify this issue to any satisfaction. because of the way that amex has been mishandling the client side of things, i have a feeling they will stiff me a third time. thanks.

@Peter – It is one credit per statement, so my assumption is that the two cards will only count once. I hear ya on the Amex customer service.

What are considered corporate cards? Business?

@Maury – The American Express corporate card is excluded. This is the greenish card that is typically used by large corporations that have a deal with Amex. Business cards are allowed, those are not the same as corporate cards. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Last year I signed up all my cards and received a credit on each one.

Does anybody know if this works for gift cards? I’d like to buy a few from a local restaurant to give away as thank you gifts.

@Flip – It really all depends on how the business puts it through the system. My gut feeling is that it will count. As long as there is a $25+ charge on your credit card at a participating business, should work.

Last year the list of businesses participatng was not all inclusive. Any local merchant or local chain that accepts AMEX should be eligible. But if in doubt, call up the business you wish to patronize and double check.

As I will be out of town, do I still qualify for credits out of my local area?

@Robert – Yes, you are able to use the credits for any small business in the US – does not have to be in “your” local area.

I see a store two states over from me that is participating. Can I buy something from Saturday via their website and have it qualify for $25 credit?

@Steven – I am not 100% sure but I would think it would work. It is all based on how it appears on your statement. If it has the name of the store and $25+ it should work. Might want to call the store and ask them to put it through the system as if you made the purchase in store.

thanks for the confirmation regarding my post. amex should give all its members some free rewards (say, even a chump 5,000) and a 25 dollar credit for the crap that its customer service has been dishing out. i know that i have not been using their card at all recently because of that, and only keep it for those few places that are amex only.
