Starting May 1st, you can earn bonus miles with almost every Hyatt stay. With the announcement of Starwoods weak promotion yesterday, I am really hoping that this miles promotion is not Hyatt’s sole summer promotion and that we’ll see a bonus points promo as well (come on Faster Free Nights)!
Essentially, between May 1st and August 31st, you can opt to earn miles instead of points with every Hyatt stay and earn the following bonus:
- First stay: no bonus points + 500 standard miles = 500 total miles
- Second stay (4x points): 1,500 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 2,500 total miles
- Third stay (4x points): 1,500 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 4,000 total miles
- Fourth stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 6,500 total miles
- Fifth stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 9,500 total miles
- Sixth stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 12,000 total miles
- Seventh stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 14,500 total miles
- Eighth stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 17,000 total miles
- Ninth stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 19,500 total miles
- Tenth stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 22,00 total miles
- Eleventh stay (5x points): 2,000 bonus miles + 500 standard miles = 24,500 total miles
Total miles you can earn with this promotion: 24,500 miles (*A few airlines have different caps as their award charts are slightly different: Southwest – 29,400 points; China Eastern – 39,200 points)
Now if you elect for miles instead of points, the only points that you will get credited to your account are the bonus points earned for having Diamond status. You will not receive any other Hyatt points for your stay, just the fixed miles. Also remember that when earning miles you earn per stay, not per night. So a 1 night stay will earn you the same number of miles as a 7 night stay. Also, it is a fixed number of miles and does not depend on the price of the room, so a $99/night stay again will earn the same number of miles as a $299/night stay. For each stay though, you can elect if you want to earn points or miles. So if you have many stays throughout the promotion and one of them is a longer more expensive stay, that particular stay can earn points instead.
You are able to earn miles at 12 different partner airline programs. If you are going for the miles promo you must enroll in one of the programs and you cannot change the choice of airline throughout. The choice of airlines include:

- British Airways Executive Club
- China Eastern
- Delta Skymiles

Essentially, the decision on whether to earn points or miles is really based on your total hotel spend. For inexpensive 1 night stays, this is a great promotion. But for longer more expensive stays, you might see a better value in sticking with earning your Hyatt points. For example, two years ago I stayed at a Hyatt hotel every Monday – Thursday for a year and a half hotel hoping every night (yes, I know I am crazy). The rate was $99/night and there was a Hyatt/Southwest promotion at the time. During the promotional period (until I reached the cap), I opted for the bonus miles. This also allowed me to earn my Southwest companion pass quite easily as all points transferred to Southwest counted. Unfortunately, the rules have changed though and the bonus points transferred do not count, just the base points.

So here is my question: BA has traditionally had points sales when transferring from Diners and I believe from Amex. Have you heard of a points sale (1.5 avios per 1 Ultimate Rewards point)with Chase Sapphire Preferred?
@David – as of today there has not been any point sale with any of the partner programs with Chase Ultimate Rewards. While I really hope we’ll see one in the future, as of today no luck with any of the programs.
I am not sure if the below statement is true, you guys may want to cross check.

I did call up Gold Passport with this same query asking if I would continue earning the diamond bonus/amenity points if I opt for miles and I was told that I won’t. If I opt for the bonus miles, all hyatt points earned (base/bonus) will be replaced by the miles.
@kdas – sorry for being unclear. It is the diamond amenity bonus that you will receive. You will not receive the 30% point bonus since you are not receiving points. I will update the post to make more clear, thanks for pointing this out.

@Matt – you need to register for the specific airline you are looking to earn the miles with. On the post there is a link for each participating airline. From there you will need to enter your Hyatt number.
Will the miles earned count toward a SW companion Pass?
@Tracy – technically the bonus miles earned do not count towards the companion pass, just the base points. However, we will soon see if they actually do end up counting.
