$10 Statement Credit with Amex in Boston, Chicago, or Philadelphia

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners, such as American Express. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here.

Another Amex syncing offering where you can get a $10 statement credit when you spend $10 or more at a small business in the Boston, Chicago, or Philadelphia metro areas. This promotion runs between June 21 and July 4, 2012. You will first need to sync and then register your Amex credit card. To sync your credit card go to shopsmallbusiness.com. You will then need to register via one of the three means of social media:

  1. Foursquare: Sync their eligible Card with foursquare, check in at an eligible small business and add the offer to their synced Card;
  2. Twitter: Sync their eligible Card with Twitter and tweet #AmexShopBos, #AmexShopChi, or #AmexShopPhi to add the appropriate offer to their synced Card; or
  3. Link, Like, Love: Sync their eligible Card with Facebook and add the offer to their synced Card

UPDATE: You can also register at these sites without having to even go the social media route:

With the new registration links it looks like you’ll be able to register for all three cities and as many Amex cards as you have. I’ll be trying to this out tomorrow, so I will keep you posted if it works! Just make sure to register before making your purchase!!
I absolutely LOVE the American Express syncing promotion. In the past 12 months, I’ve received $1,034.60 back by American Express just by registering for their various statement back promotions. All of this is where I would have spent the money anyways!
  • Card 1: Starwood American Express (Mrs. Deals)
    • Link, Like, Love Starwood Promotion: $40 statement credit
    • Small Business Saturday: $25 statement credit
    • Gift Chain Promotion: $29.50 statement credit, $180 worth of American Express gift cards, $8 in Dunkin Donuts gift cards, and $20 in Starbucks gift cards = $296.50 (all for purchasing $225 worth of Pottery Barn gift cards which will be used anyways)
    • Mix-n-Match Promotion: $50 statement credit (would have had this purchase anyways)
    • Downtown Manhattan Merchant: $10 statement credit
    • Redbox: $5 + $2 + $5 = $12 statement credit
    • Gulf Oil: $5 statement credit
    • Seamless Web: $5 statement credit
    • Panera Bread: $10 statement credit
    • Virgin America: $25.10 statement credit
    • Best Buy: $10 statement credit
    • Austin Retailer: $10 statement credit
    • TOTAL MADE: $498.60
  • Card 2: Starwood American Express (Mr. Deals)
    • Link, Like, Love Starwood Promotion: $40 statement credit
    • Small Business Saturday: $25 statement credit
    • Gift Chain Promotion: $60 statement credit, $16 in Dunkin Donuts gift cards, and $20 in Starbucks gift cards = $96.00 (all for purchasing $250 worth of Pottery Barn gift cards which will be used anyways)
    • Mix-n-Match Promotion: $50 statement credit
    • Downtown Manhattan Merchant: $10 statement credit
    • Seamless Web: $5 statement credit
    • Austin Retailer: $10 statement credit
    • TOTAL MADE: $236.00
  • Card 3: The NEW Business Gold Rewards Card(R) from American Express OPEN
    • Small Business Saturday: $25 statement credit
    • Gift Chain Promotion: $25 statement credit, $8 in Dunkin Donuts gift cards, and $40 worth of American Express gift cards = $73.00 (all for purchasing $200 worth of REI gift cards which will be used anyways)
    • Mix-n-Match Promotion: $50 statement credit
    • TOTAL MADE: $125
  • Card 4: American Express Hilton HHonors
    • Small Business Saturday: $25 statement credit
    • Mix-n-Match Promotion: $50 statement credit
    • TOTAL MADE: $75
  • Card 5: Macy’s American Express
    • Mix-n-Match Promotion: $50 statement credit
    • TOTAL MADE: $50
  • Card 6: Bloomingdales American Express
    • Mix-n-Match Promotion: $50 statement credit
    • TOTAL MADE: $50

For many of these promotions (i.e., Mix-n-Match, Panera, Best Buy, Gift Chain) all I had to do was purchase a gift card at the qualifying merchant and it triggered the statement credit! This current $10 statement credit back at these three cities should not be different. If you do not live in one of these cities, call a participating merchant and order a $10 gift card that you can use at another time or back in your home city. Just make sure that the transaction comes directly from their location and not from a headquarters located elsewhere.

  1. “call a participating merchant and order a $10 gift card that you can use at another time or back in your home city” Will they mail the gift card to you?

    • @kadence – I have not yet had a chance to look through the list of participating merchants to see which ones are located nationally to see if that will work. However, it is really up to the merchant. Many will absolutely ship you a gift card, but there is no absolute answer.

  2. Hmm Portillo’s gift cards for those of you who visit Chicago and like hot dogs. 🙂 $10 + $1.95 s/h charge. x however many gift cards you have. You can order them online. Anyone have any other suggestions for gift cards you can order online that are charged in Chicago, Boston, or Philly?

  3. Addition to previous post: Sorry! I cannot confirm that Portillo’s is listed on the eligible AmEx list. This is the worst tool ever to find a small business. I remember the Small Business Saturday had a much better tool – can anyone provide some assistance with finding a better search tool? Thanks.

    • @dave – I agree, it is horrible. However if you go to foursquare many merchants list a special that include this $10 statement credit promotion, so that might be a good place to look. Many listed are not included in the search tool, so I am not really trusting this search tool.

  4. Thanks dealswelike – BTW, this is my favorite blog. Please keep up the great work! You have taught me to maximize my rewards earning and spending resulting in some incredible vacations and other goodies.

I am probably speaking for many readers – Between my wife and I, we have approx. 8 AmEx cards sitting in a binder at home with another 2-3 in our wallets. I would love to receive statement credits to offset a portion of the annual fees, and have found that even after fees, AmEx pays for itself in many ways. Not to mention the customer service is INCREDIBLE.

Living in Washington, DC, I am now looking for the best way to get a $10 credit to my statement without flying to Boston, Chicago, or Philly. The FourSquare tool sounds like it is a bit more helpful, but not always accurate. I did find this tool, which may assist: https://www.facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday?sk=app_183558821725512 – this was from the Small Business Saturday Facebook page.

  5. @dealswelike – I did tweet the chicago offer. I got the “you tweet and you saved” email about 5 minutes after my online order. the transaction is still pending(purchase date 6/21), from experience they usually apply the statement credit couple days after the confirmation of the charge.

my gf signed up using the link for chicago, she hasn’t receive any “you saved” emails yet after buying the gift card.

  6. I did the tastesofchicago and have not yet received confirmation. I also did the spicehouse and have not yet received the email confirmation after about 1 hour now. Hope they went through okay.

Does anyone have any recommendations for philadelphia and boston?

  7. I don’t know if they were participating… I read on other blogs that others reported success at these two small businesses. I will actually be in Chicago next month to use the tastesofchicago gift cards. I have no plan to go to phil or boston, so hopefully an online order from one of their local small businesses will work.

  8. The tastesofchicago order has a location of:
    3685 WOODHEAD DR
    NORTHBROOK
    IL
    60062-1816
    UNITED STATES

according to my Amex pending charges. so it is actually not technically chicago, but maybe i will get lucky

    • @sam – it also includes the towns outside of the cities. However, I believe only certain small businesses are participating. I am trying it out tonight so will report back.

  9. I’m surprised no blogs are detailing ways to use the credits in each city. I personally have 7 american express cards through me and hubby. That’s $210 total in free stuff. If only i knew where to use them

  10. @dealswelike we both used it at tasteofchicago.com(the gift cards are combinable) I think receiving the confirmation email has to do with me registering via twitter vs the website.

  11. My Amex Hilton (synced with Twitter) got the savings email after purchasing a $10 gift card from Malnati’s (Tastes of Chicago), but my Amex SPG (synced through the https://enroll.amexnetwork.com/US/en/chi/ website) did not get any email. Perhaps it is only one card per cardmember per location. We’ll see.

Thanks for the heads up though!

  12. http://www.fantes.com worked for Philadelphia. E-mail confirmation received from Amex, but it was delayed because the website doesn’t automatically run your card – it is run by hand later in the store, which is why the orders trigger the statement credit.

$10 gift certificates are available. When you check out they chage a $5.95 shipping fee, but the fine print says the fee is not charged when they swipe your card. I can confirm that this is the case.

  13. @dealswelike – bought it on june 21, and received the statement credit on june 25. my gf also got the statement credit without receiving the amex “you have saved” email.

    • lu – glad to hear it worked! I am still waiting for my statement credit from a purchase this past sunday, we will see if it works!
