$50 FREE American Express Gift Card!

Many of you already ordered your American Express prepaid card, right?! You can read more about it here, but essentially this is the one where you can get a free $25 gift card when ordering and loading $200+ on the card (and remember you can do this three times, thus $75 in free gift cards).

So for those of you who have done this already, or are going to do this, there is a way to make this offer even better! I received an email this morning (and a few readers emailed me about this, so thank you!), that if you set up your employer direct deposit to the American Express prepaid card you can get another $50 gift card after your first two direct deposits of at least $250 each. Your direct deposit must be set up by September 30, 2012.

I know that setting up direct deposit with some employers can be a pain in the a$$, so this might not be worth it for you. For me personally, I am able to change my employer direct deposit pretty easily via their internal online system and designate exactly how much of my pay check I want to go to each account. I will set up $250 for all my prepaid cards and allow it to go through two direct deposit cycles. I know with my company it can take up to two weeks to fully be activated, so make sure to keep this in mind and not wait till the last minute.

Now the one other caveat is that at the bottom of the email it states “This special offer is only valid on orders received from this e-mail address,” so I am not sure if everyone will be eligible for this, but it’s worth a shot. If you have one of the prepaid cards, make sure to check your deleted or spam mail if you do not find it.

The only other thing I am unsure of is if you can get the $50 bonus for each card or just once. I guess time will tell? It says the gift card will take 6 weeks to be mailed so I should receive this in time for the September 30th expiration date and let you all know. Also remember, you are able to withdraw up to $400 a day, just make sure to not abuse this perk. You will only be charged an ATM fee from the ATM you use, so if you find a no-fee ATM you are in the clear of any fees at all.

American Express has been really good to us lately! Let’s hope this free money continues!

How do you setup direct deposit for prepaid card. Dont we need account number & routing number of the bank?

@bayguy – When you go to set it up it gives you all that info (account number and routing number). They even have it all pre-populated for you on a sheet to give your employer if needed.

Sometimes you can do 2 ACH transactions from another bank account and have it count as direct deposits. I’m going to try it with different banks from each of my 2 prepaid cards and I’ll let you know how it turns out.

I did this original deal with the$25 after $200 load after seeing it on your blog. Today in the mail I received five $25 gift cards. I am totally confused. Have you heard of this?

@smitt06 – How many times did you do the deal? Seems like if you only did it once, you lucked out! I actually still haven’t received my gift cards so we’ll see what I receive.

I did it twice (but once was yesterday). I’m not sure what to do at this point. Any chance they would claw the money back from me?
