Another blog post from Mr. Deals…

Happy New Year! Hope everyone got to enjoy some vacation time, family time, and really just some time away from work. I’m sure most of you were traveling (duh). I enjoyed a week with the in-laws in South Florida and luckily we had some pretty sweet weather all while the north east was getting a blast of snow. I was cringing thinking about the snowboarding conditions I was missing, but you got to do what you got to do…

So entering the new year it dawned on me I’ve done alright with status up to this point. I have my Select status on Amtrak and I picked up Platinum status on American (huge milestone), but where I’m really slacking is hotel status. Mrs. Deals has held all of the power in that domain and I’m sick of it. I want in. I want to be wined and dined when I travel for business and have access to the little finger foods in the concierge lounge. Game on wifey, game on.

Here’s my dilemma, which hotel should I focus on? Mrs. Deals has status at Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott and Starwood. So she’s pretty well covered. I’m ruling out Kimpton, because well, it’s Kimpton. Priority Club, Wyndham, Radisson just don’t get me all tingly inside. I want one of the big boys. I’m thinking Hilton is going to be the one. Mrs. Deals only has Gold status there, which means I still have my work cut out for me. She’s top tier at all the other places, so I see no reason to bother, I’m all about one-upping her.

Let’s be honest, this probably won’t happen, because when we travel together we will use her status to get us upgraded and wined and dined. This just means I’ll have to travel a ton for work, but given that I just started with a startup, that could pose a problem (Hilton’s aren’t cheap). I will figure this out one way or another.

Wish me luck!

Go Hilton, but get Diamond status by spending $40k/yr on a credit card. That’s only $3.3k/mo, which you can easily do with Vanilla even if you don’t have that much in legit spend. This also means that you will get all of y’all’s Hilton together stays because you’ll have the higher status and it will become a self-sustaining venture. 😉

Actually what I did was get free platinum accor status, have it matched to best western diamond status and club Carlson silver( I did match this to my HH gold. Didn’t think about it before) next..I’m going for Marriott plat challenge at beginning of month so u get almost 4 months to get 9 stays.

When u get top tier with Hilton, radisson will match with gold. Between Bogo and upgrades I’ve had 50% on paying and upgrades! Works better than my Marriott plat.

“I’m ruling out Kimpton, because well, it’s Kimpton.”-what exactly do you have against Kimpton?

@MidCentModFan – I’ll actually speak on behalf of the Mr. He is actually only stayed at one Kimpton and liked it. But I think since he will be traveling to various places, Kimpton’s are not always available and it is just not a chain he wants to put in full effort.

I like Priority Club Platinum status. Very easy to get with its credit card. You get an upgrade to the best available room when you arrive. Very nice for expensive hotels in Europe.
