If you currently have travel plans to/from the Northeast today or tomorrow be prepared for cancellations. It has already started snowing in NYC (although is supposed to turn to rain for the afternoon), but the bulk of the storm is to come after 8pm and last throughout the night. Outside of the city and up North more (Boston/Connecticut/Rhode Island), it will actually be worse.
If you have a flight, call the airline or go online immediately and change it to Sunday. Many flights have actually already been cancelled (some even cancelled last night) in preparation for the storm. Airlines have gotten better with canceling flights ahead of time to avoid chaos at the airport and to allow airplanes to not be at the affected airports at the time of the storm. If you are flying out of the Northeast I’d suggest rescheduling to later in the day Sunday (instead of first flight out) so there is time Sunday morning to clean up the airports and get the planes back into the airport.
If you go to your airlines website, there will be a travel advisory notice letting you know which dates you can reschedule for and how you have to go about changing your flight – some you can do online and others you have to call. I’ve found in the past that calling an airline during a busy time like this can cause extremely long hold times, but if you know Spanish call the line for Spanish speaking customers and you might find you are able to get through a lot quicker. Remember, many times you are allowed a one time change, so already know your ideal travel dates. Airlines will also allow you to cancel and get your money back if you want to just cancel the trip all together.
If you are trying to get home from your destination and incurring extra expenses due to a cancelled flight, figure out what credit card you booked your flight on and you might have some trip delay insurance that you didn’t even know about! Read this prior post to see which credit cards give you the best benefit. Overall, most of the Chase cards have the best benefits.
Goodluck with your travel plans this weekend!
