Cheap Budget Car Rentals

A few weeks ago I shared a great car rental deal from Hertz for $13.49/day. Based on the comments, many people were able to utilize this cheap rate and actually save money based on already reserved reservations. While browsing around the Budget site, I was actually able to find a comparable deal to the Hertz one I shared, if not better.

For an economy or compact car, you can get $15/day (for weekend rentals) or $119/week. For an intermediate SUV, you can get $22/day (for weekend rentals) or $139/week. Similar to the Hertz discount, this is only available for participating airport locations and is valid for rentals through June 15, 2013. A weekly rate requires a minimum of 5 consecutive days (with a 14 day maximum), and a weekend rental starts at noon on Thursday and the car must be returned by Monday at 11:59pm. For a Thursday and Friday pick up, a Friday night overnight stay is required. There are some additional terms, so make sure to look through the Budget site to review the blackout dates for certain cities, along with non-participating locations.

Go to this budget site to reserve your car and make sure BCD code D454300 for the economy/compact car or D454301 for the SUV car. The great thing about this discount is it will also let you combine a coupon code with it as well. So here are some coupon codes to use depending on which one saves you the most money:

  • TUGZ003 – One free day on a weekend rental
  • MUGZ022 – $30 off a weekly rental (must include Saturday night)
  • UUGZ039 – Free upgrade on a compact through full size rental
  • MUGZ071 – $10 off a 2-day weekend rental
  • MUGZ072 – $15 off a 3-day weekend rental
  • MUGZ073 – $20 off a 4-day weekend rental
Since a free day on a weekend rental is worth $15, you are better off using that coupon code unless you have a 4-day rental. However, if your goal is to get a bigger car for cheaper, the free upgrade coupon code is always valuable too.
Also remember that if you book your car rental through a cash back site and earn some money back or points/miles depending on the one you select. You can get 3.5% back with Topcashback.com, 3% back with Big Crumbs, and 2 points/$ with Chase Ultimate Rewards. Enjoy!

Great deal thanks. Booked for the DC area end of April for 6 days and the rate including 2 booster seats is $300, picking the SUV at IAD.

Rate would increase $300 if return to DCA!!! Any fixes for this?

Thanks again!

Thank you! Just reserved a full-size car for the Memorial Day weekend for $82 (of which over $40 is taxes). Gonna cancel my “free” Hertz rental for 1,900 points and $66 (i.e., $16 for 1,900 points). Awesome!

Just tried doing a rental at SJU in Puerto Rico, and it accepts the code, but the rental still shows for $135 for 3-days. Not sure what’s going on.

Tried using the TUGZ003 coupon today and got “This type of coupon cannot be applied online. Paper coupons must be presented at the rental counter and may require proper credentials.” Wonder if they will cancel my reservation like Avis did?

@Ken – Your reservation absolutely will not be cancelled as this is an advertised promotion by Budget, it is not a loophole or some computer glitch.

Hopefully they won’t press the “paper coupon must be presented” issue then.

@mileswhore – In my experience, I’ve never been asked for a paper coupon at any car rental place.

[…] In Rochester, you’ll be renting for 4 days and returning in Cleveland.  That usually makes it a little more expensive.  In Kansas City, you’ll rent for 4 days and return at the same location.  My favorite thing to do is to book fully ignorable reservations on Expedia.com, and then keep checking back to see if the rate ever goes down… if they do, cancel and rebook.  You can also try these deals by fellow travel blogger, Dealswelike.com. I got the $22 rate to show up for Budget, but it isn’t letting me add any coupons at all to the special rate. Any clue why? I got the Avis deal instead, but it would be a few dollars cheaper with Budget. DAL Love Field 6/14-6/16 Intermediate SUV. Thanks for the great deals and the help!

@Harrison – Not sure why. Sometimes those coupons can be applied when picking up the car though.

Great deal if you could find availability! I found the discount codes with Avis are giving me the best price usually. I used about half a dozen and it’s normally 50% (often 80%). I never had trouble with the rentals and had some spectacular Mercedes upgrades in Europe.

I found your post while surfing around to make sure my deal wasn’t too good to be true! I used code D464700 for the intermediate SUV, it went up a lot when I used the one above. I did change my reservation and add the weekly code you posted. Intermediate SUV for 8 days from BDL for 283.72!!! Thanks for the coupon.
