American Airlines is Giving out Status, Sorta

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here. Additionally, some of the offers on this page may no longer be available through Deals We Like.

I received a very happy email from my brother earlier today saying he received an email from American Airlines offering him Platinum status. A few hours later, a friend sent me one offering him Gold status. So it looks like many people are getting some great targeted offers.

UPDATE: Since I posted yesterday I’ve received two other emails letting me know that there is a targeted Executive Platinum offer and another offer just offering a challenge, no immediate upgrade for the time being.

Executive Platinum status offer:

  • Receive upgraded membership to Executive Platinum status through August 31, 2013
  • Opportunity to extend Executive Platinum status through February 28, 2015 – must earn 30,000 miles or points on American (or other select partner airlines – British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and eligible codeshare flights) by August 31, 2013
  • Executive Platinum offer includes 8 eVIP upgrades once you’ve reached the 30,000 mile/point requirement – you will not get this ahead of time
  • Executive Platinum benefits include:
    • Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades
    • Complimentary Upgrades on full-fare tickets (booked in Fare Classes Y or B)
    • Confirmed upgrades as early as 100 hours prior to departure
    • 100% mileage bonus on base miles flown
    • Complimentary access to Preferred Seats and Main Cabin Extra
    • Guaranteed Economy Class Availability
    • Waived Ticketing Service Charge
    • Waived AAdvantage Award Change and Reinstatement Charges
    • Waived charges for two checked bags
    • Priority Access at check-in and through security and boarding
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 – not sure of the promotion code right now, but it is in your targeted email (if received)

Platinum status offer:

  • Receive upgraded membership to Platinum status through August 31, 2013
  • Opportunity to extend Platinum status through February 28, 2015 – must earn 12,000 miles or points on American (or other select partner airlines – British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and eligible codeshare flights) by August 31, 2013
  • Twenty (20) 500-miles upgrades to your account!!!
  • Platinum benefits include:
    • Confirmed upgrades as early as 72 hours prior to departure
    • 100% mileage bonus on base miles flown
    • Complimentary access to Preferred Seats and Main Cabin Extra
    • Waived charges for two checked bags
    • Priority Access at check-in and through security and boarding
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 with promotion code HVLP1
Gold status offer:
  • Receive upgraded membership to Gold status through August 31, 2013
  • Opportunity to extend Gold status through February 28, 2015 – must earn 6,000 miles or points on American (or other select partner airlines – British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and eligible codeshare flights) by August 31, 2013
  • Ten (10) 500-miles upgrades to your account!!
  • Gold benefits include:
    • Confirmed upgrades as early as 24 hours prior to departure
    • 25% mileage bonus on base miles flown
    • Complimentary access to Preferred Seats
    • Complimentary access to Main Cabin Extra through December 31, 2013
    • Waived charges for two checked bags
    • Priority Access at check-in and through security and boarding
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 with promotion code HVLG1

Earn any status level, but no immediate bump offer:

  • Opportunity to earn Gold, Platinum or Executive Platinum valid through February 28, 2015
    • Gold status = 6,000 miles or points
    • Platinum status = 12,000 miles or points
    • Executive Platinum status = 30,000 miles or points
  • All miles flown through August 31, 2013 will count towards achieving the status level
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 with promotion code HV3TA

Unfortunately I was not targeted, and I am really not sure who their target audience is. I know my brother is currently Gold (and received the Platinum offer) and has been flying every week with American for the past 5 months. While I am lifetime Gold, I probably have flown with American once in the past 8 months or so.

Keep in mind though that registering for the promotion if you were not targeted will most likely not get you the promo. For many targeted promos that I haven’t been targeted for, I’ve always registered just for fun and have never received the perks – so don’t get your hopes up!
Make sure to go back and check your email from today and see if American reached out to you. The subject line was either “You Deserve Instant Platinum Status” or “You Deserve Instant Gold Status.”
For those of you who received this email, enjoy your upgraded status and good luck earning the points to continue the status for almost another 2 years!! Just don’t forget to register.

Correct. It’s the same place all other American airline bonuses are housed. Passenger in the car so not able to copy and paste links easily right now!

@joel – unfortunately if you didn’t receive the email it won’t work. As I just mentioned to another commenter I’d suggest the platinum challenge. I will explain it in detail in tomorrow’s blog post.

Any idea how to tell if it worked? I got some generic response after trying to register for the Gold deal-
“Thank You. You are now registered for the HVLG1 promotion. To earn the bonus or the incentive offered, you must meet all of the requirements associated with this promotion. Some of the requirements may include, but are not limited to:” etc etc

@mlh – if you didn’t receive the email it won’t work unfortunately. However, if you have that many flights coming up in the near future I’d recommend the platinum challenge. Ill post more on this tomorrow.

I just tried the signup using both the HVLG1 and HVLP1 using separate emails (I was not previously an AA member). Unfortunately, after logging in, I just showed as a ‘regular’ new member, with 0 miles and 0 status. 🙁 It appears this might be a targeted campaign for certain lucky people. Maybe it’ll work for someone else, though.

I don’t fly AA often, I was really only interested in it for a status match from Delta (PMttP’s article from today).
Thanks for the heads up!

– I’m already Plat and was hoping to regain the status (plus the 20 e-vips!) for next year.

@alex – unfortunately probably not, at least I am 99.999% positive it won’t work. Once you register if your AA number was originally intended for this promotion you’ll receive an email confirmation. Just a generic confirmation on the web page doesn’t mean you are qualified. Unlike many other airline/hotel promotion registration sites, AA does not have the back end technology to tell you upfront you don’t qualify if your number isn’t in their targeted data base list for that promo.

I was able to sign up for the PLT offer, and have no a couple of flights booked, now, I also signed up for the LAX-RDU double mileage bonus, will this count towards the PLT miles? If so, I should have signed up for the EXPLT…

@Tony – Were you targeted for the PLT offer? Is platinum now reflected in your AA account?

I was no targeted, and currently it does not show up, I was under the impression that I had fly 12K miles then get the status, am I wrong? I also signed up for the double mile promotion LAX-RDU, two of those RT will give me enough miles for this…
