Clarification on American Airline Status Upgrade Promo

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here. Additionally, some of the offers on this page may no longer be available through Deals We Like.

Last week I posted about a targeted promotion where American Airline was sending select AAdvantage members the opportunity to upgrade their status. There are four different promotions overall and you MUST actually register for the promotion.

Now, as I mentioned last week, you will only be upgraded IF you in fact received this email. With all American Airline promotions, anyone can register and receive a confirmation page and email. This DOES NOT mean you actually qualify for the promotion. Of course it doesn’t hurt to register and see if the promotion applies to you (in case the email went to your spam folder or what not). You will know whether or not you were targeted based on what your current AAdvantage status now states online. If you tried registering last week when I first announced this promotion, your status will already be updated. If your status is NOT updated that means you were not registered and thus not eligible for the promotion.

I know there was a lot of confusion around this, so I just wanted to clarify! Here are the four promotions that people received.

Executive Platinum status offer:

  • Receive upgraded membership to Executive Platinum status through August 31, 2013
  • Opportunity to extend Executive Platinum status through February 28, 2015 – must earn 30,000 miles or points on American (or other select partner airlines – British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and eligible codeshare flights) by August 31, 2013
  • Executive Platinum offer includes 8 eVIP upgrades once you’ve reached the 30,000 mile/point requirement – you will not get this ahead of time
  • Executive Platinum benefits include:
    • Unlimited Complimentary Upgrades
    • Complimentary Upgrades on full-fare tickets (booked in Fare Classes Y or B)
    • Confirmed upgrades as early as 100 hours prior to departure
    • 100% mileage bonus on base miles flown
    • Complimentary access to Preferred Seats and Main Cabin Extra
    • Guaranteed Economy Class Availability
    • Waived Ticketing Service Charge
    • Waived AAdvantage Award Change and Reinstatement Charges
    • Waived charges for two checked bags
    • Priority Access at check-in and through security and boarding
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 – not sure of the promotion code right now, but it is in your targeted email (if received)

Platinum status offer:

  • Receive upgraded membership to Platinum status through August 31, 2013
  • Opportunity to extend Platinum status through February 28, 2015 – must earn 12,000 miles or points on American (or other select partner airlines – British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and eligible codeshare flights) by August 31, 2013
  • Twenty (20) 500-miles upgrades to your account!!!
  • Platinum benefits include:
    • Confirmed upgrades as early as 72 hours prior to departure
    • 100% mileage bonus on base miles flown
    • Complimentary access to Preferred Seats and Main Cabin Extra
    • Waived charges for two checked bags
    • Priority Access at check-in and through security and boarding
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 with promotion code HVLP1

Gold status offer:

  • Receive upgraded membership to Gold status through August 31, 2013
  • Opportunity to extend Gold status through February 28, 2015 – must earn 6,000 miles or points on American (or other select partner airlines – British Airways, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and eligible codeshare flights) by August 31, 2013
  • Ten (10) 500-miles upgrades to your account!!
  • Gold benefits include:
    • Confirmed upgrades as early as 24 hours prior to departure
    • 25% mileage bonus on base miles flown
    • Complimentary access to Preferred Seats
    • Complimentary access to Main Cabin Extra through December 31, 2013
    • Waived charges for two checked bags
    • Priority Access at check-in and through security and boarding
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 with promotion code HVLG1

Earn any status level, but no immediate bump offer:

  • Opportunity to earn Gold, Platinum or Executive Platinum valid through February 28, 2015
    • Gold status = 6,000 miles or points
    • Platinum status = 12,000 miles or points
    • Executive Platinum status = 30,000 miles or points
  • All miles flown through August 31, 2013 will count towards achieving the status level
  • Must register by midnight (CDT) on May 15, 2013 with promotion code HV3TA
*With this last promotion, you’ll have to call American to ensure you qualify as there is no way of telling in your account. This was a promotion where you will not receive status right away (like the other ones), but will only earn it once you hit the various miles/points levels.

For those of you who received this email, enjoy your upgraded status and good luck earning the points to continue the status for almost another 2 years!! Just don’t forget to register.

HVLE1 for EP status — seems to be working for me (even though I didn’t get the email). Doesn’t hurt to try.

@B — your status was upgraded? If not, it doesn’t apply to you.

So to get this straight…how will you know if it worked? Will your status be upgraded immediately or will it take time to process? Does a confirmation email mean it worked?

@zach – a confirmation email unfortunately doesn’t mean anything. Those that registered right when the promo came out last week had their account updated in a few days.

You’ll know if you qualify because you’ll get the email and after registering (a week of two later) the upgrades will show up. I suspect this may either be tied to citi AA card holders or those that redeemed miles with them recently or have been inactive in flying on AA but just guessing because of my situation

I registered but didn’t get a confirmation email. AA confirmed my eligibility but I need to provide confirmation email. HELP!
