Transfer Amex Points to British Airways with a 35% Bonus

A few weeks ago American Express announced a great bonus offer when transferring Membership Reward points to British Airways Avios points. From now until June 7, 2013 you will receive a 35% bonus for all transfers. The last time Amex offered a BA Avios transfer bonus was over the winter and it was at 30%.

I  personally transferred about half of my Amex point balance a year ago with the 50% transfer bonus. There haven’t been too many transfer promotions, so this is one of the better offers on the table. It has been two years or so since we’ve seen a Delta transfer bonus and all of the other bonuses are no where as lucrative. While I personally would suggest transferring during a 50% bonus offer, there really is no way of knowing if that will ever come back. With any other bonus opportunities, it is always like playing the lottery. A 35% bonus is pretty good as well though!

I personally like that my American Express Membership Reward points have the flexibility to be used for many programs, so I will not be transferring anymore points from my account since I already have a ton of BA Avios points.

If you are not as aware of the British Airways Avios points, make sure to read these prior posts. It really can be a great program for many! This series was also written when the BA credit card was at a 100,000 bonus offer for new card applicants, but has since been downgraded to 50,000 bonus points.

I need about 29k for my next FC companion ticket to Nice so I am torn between transferring 22k from AMEX or holding out for the bigger transfer bonus and transferring 29k from Ultimate Rewards……….Boy I love these tough decisions that Ultimate Rewards flexibility gives……..the ultimate free agent…….

@RJ – I personally would utilize the American Express points. While there might be a better promotion in the future, the absolute best you’ll see is 50%, and I have my doubts that will come along again anytime soon. Even with a 50% promo, with transferring 22k amex points it would have resulted in only 3,300 additional Avios points. I’d do that and keep the UR points.
