Transfer American Airline Miles with a 30% Bonus

Through October 10, 2013, American Airlines will give you up to a 30% bonus when you transfer miles from your AA account to another members AA account. While this sounds great on the surface, AA charges an arm and a leg for fees so do not get too excited just yet. For the majority of you, this probably won’t be a good deal, but some might benefit. First off, you will receive the following bonus depending on the number of points transferred:

  • 5,000-25,000 miles = 20% bonus
  • 26,000-49,000 miles = 25% bonus
  • 50,000 miles = 30% bonus

So let’s say that you want to transfer miles to another persons account so you have enough miles to redeem for an awards ticket. Transferring 50,000 miles will cost you a hefty $550.00. Plus every transaction is charged $35, so we are looking at a $585.00 fee and you’ll only earn a bonus of 15,000 miles. Keep in mind the person receiving the miles will earn the bonus, NOT the person transferring the miles. If you are in need for those 65,000 miles (50,000 + 15,000 bonus) to redeem for a first class ticket that might have otherwise cost you thousands of dollars than the transfer cost might be worth it. But keep in mind you are essentially purchasing points for a very high price – 3.6 cents per mile. If you were to purchase miles directly from AA with no promotion, those 15,000 miles would only cost you $473.44.

Of course do the math and see if it works out for your particular scenario, but overall this is a promotion that most likely will not be valuable for most. I personally think it is ridiculous that they put such an expensive price tag on transferring miles from one account to another since you really aren’t gaining too much.

Terms: Please allow 5 days for the bonus miles to post to the recipient’s AAdvantage account. Transactions are nonreversible and nonrefundable. There is no limit to the number of transactions allowed during the offer period, however members may transfer up to 100,000 AAdvantage miles (in increments of 1,000 – 50,000 AAdvantage miles) and receive up to 100,000 miles (in increments of 1,000 – 50,000 AAdvantage miles) per AAdvantage account, per calendar year. Bonus miles earned do not count toward the 100,000 mile annual Share limit. AAdvantage miles transferred do not count toward elite-status qualification or Million MilerSM status.

  1. Thank you for making posts about promotions that are not great “deals” as well as the ones that are. It is helpful when you explain the math behind the promotion so we can make a more informed decision about the value.
