Spend $75+ at Staples, Get a $25 Statement Credit with Amex Sync

By syncing your American Express card, you can get a $25 statement credit with a $75+ purchase at Staples in-store and online at www.staples.com. As of right now you can only register for the promotion by going to your American Express account and registering for this promotion via the “Offers for You” tab. I personally am only able to see it with one of my Amex credit card accounts, not both.

The great news about this is this stacks with purchasing a gift card that I wrote about this morning, although you have to use an Amex card, not a Chase card. With this you can purchase a $25 and $50 gift card in one transaction to reach the $75 amount. The promotion states e-gift cards are not eligible, but regular gift cards are. Unfortunately the e-gift cards online are the ones with no fee, while the regular gift cards cary a $1.99 fee.  I am not quite sure how Amex will know what type of gift card purchase you make, but to play it safe, I suggest purchasing a regular gift card until there are reports that both work (if in fact this is the case, which I do believe).

$25 + $50 Gift Card Purchased Online with $1.99 Fee (per card)

  • Going through TopCashBack.com shopping portal = $2.37
  • Linking your credit card to Plink = 300 Plink points
  • Syncing your American Express card = $25
  • TOTAL money made = $29.74 – $3.98 = $25.72

$25 + $50 Gift Card Purchased In-Store

  • Linking your credit card to Plink = 300 Plink points
  • Syncing your American Express card = $25
  • TOTAL money made = $28

Since e-gift cards do not count, you’ll earn more free money by purchasing a gift card in-store. However, if you live far from a Staples location then the 300 points you’ll be getting from Plink and the cash back from a shopping portal will offset the cost of the gift card fee online.

Now, before you go ahead and make a $75 gift card purchase, Staples is offering a great deal starting this upcoming Sunday where if you purchase $300+ in MasterCard gift cards you’ll get a $20 Staples gift card after rebate. I’ll write more about this Sunday, but you will be maximizing with the $25 statement credit (when purchasing a $100 gift card with Amex), Chase Ultimate Reward points (when purchasing a $200 gift card with Chase Ink Bold/Plus), and then Plink points.

If you read this blog often, you know that I absolutely love the American Express Sync concept and have received a bunch of statement credits due to making purchases with a registered Amex credit card. Remember, these promotions are only valuable to those with an American Express card (non-Corporate or prepaid cards) and is only a one-time statement credit. If you have multiple Amex cards, you will need to sync them to different accounts.

This promotion ends December 10, 2013. If you are purchasing an item that will not be delivering till after this date, you must ensure that your purchase posts by this date or you will not earn the statement credit. Purchasing a gift card will allow you to make a purchase post 12/10, but still get the benefit of the $25  statement credit.

  1. Is it also necessary to sync your card at Twitter, Foursquare or Facebook? Or is registration at the AMEX site enough for this promotion? Thanks.

  2. I called AMEX and they said that this was targetted and that I was not eligible. I have three business CC with Amex, any ideas?

  3. Both my husband’s and my SPG cards show the offer. Between the two of us we have five cards that show the offer: Delta Platinum, Delta Gold, Business Gold and two SPG! This offer makes up (a little bit) for the reduction in the Small Business Saturday statement credit from $25 to $10 coming up on Nov 30.

  4. If not targeted, I think people should just wait. Most sync promotions seem to roll out in stages…and I expect a twitter hashtag to show up soon, as well as on the facebook Amex Sync page.

Quick tip: Have different AX cards sync’d for twitter and facebook to maximize deals.

  5. Odd, I saw it on every one of my Amex Cards that I checked–Platinum, SPG, Delta Gold, Green… Once I clicked on it however, it disappeared from all, so you can only do it once.

As far as I can tell, you just have to register the offer for that specific card by clicking on it. I don’t think you are required to do any tweeting or whatever, but hey, what do I know?

I’ve never done TopCashBack, so I just went through the Ultimate Rewards mall to Staples for an additional 2X.

My experience has been that I can’t get my Amex cards to work at Plink for whatever reason–it only lists one of them when there are five on the same login. So I didn’t bother with that. Oh well, no biggie. Take what you can from this.

I didn’t see ANY gift cards I was interested in that didn’t have the $1.99 fee. The Amex langugage said it didn’t apply for eGift cards, so decided to pay the fee and wait for the cards in the mail. No idea if it actually would have worked with eGift Cards or not of course…

  6. I ordered a couple of GC’s online that totaled. $76.99 and they charge me $4.63 sales tax! I have never seen taxes on GC before. Anyone has same experience?

  7. is it necessary for Synced? I received an email from Amex. After I log in my account, I see the offer. So why Synced?

  8. Hi, this offer will not added to the account if you chat with Amex Reps, however, calling Amex will definetely help. I advise all of you not to waste your time chatting as they are not able to add this offer, simply call AMEX people

  9. bite the bullet, synced and purchased a $100 e-gift card via staple online.
not sure if the statement credit will come thro’ though.

this is what the purchase was shown in amex online statement.

Category: Merchandise & Supplies – Internet Purchase

will report if i rcvd the statement credit or not.

  12. General question about Plinking this deal– I currently have another credit card account linked with my Plink account. I made some purchases yesterday and am expecting a lot of Plink points (Sears!) which haven’t arrived yet. Does anybody know if I risk losing those points if I change the card linked to my Plink account before those points arrive? For example, if I now link Plink to my AMEX card for this Staples deal, could I potentially lose the incoming Plink points?

    • @Dave – Make sure your points post BEFORE you switch cards. You could lose incoming Plink points if you change prior to points posting.

  13. Offer only by inviation. If you are not targetted you will not get this offer. I called the online support and they were able to check instantly that i am not eligible. Don’t get cought up into all the hype.

  14. I never received an email from Amex. When I logged into my online account on the Amex site, I hit “Offers” and about 6 offers, including the $25 Staples offer, popped up for my Hilton Amex card. Same thing happened for my husband.

No offer when I tried the Costco card – maybe because it is a Costco card, but perhaps because I had already synced a card. Perhaps they only let you sync one card per name. The Costco card did show a few other offers, which I had seen on the Hilton cards.

Anyway, thanks for the post. I plan to stop by a Staples and see what GCs I can get next week. Also changed our Plink cards from Chase to Amex and now need to remember to change them back once the Staples deal dies. Thanks again for the tips.

  15. I have a question about your statement here:
“I’ll write more about this Sunday, but you will be maximizing with the $25 statement credit (when purchasing a $100 gift card with Amex)…”
A $75 purchase should be enough to get the $25, won’t it? We needn’t buy a $100 gift card unless we want to, or there are no gift cards to total $75, right?

  16. Further on the subject, just like @alt, I got hit with a $9 sales tax as well. However staples needed to talk to me on the transaction, thus will c what happen on Monday as I called after 8pm EST. Cheers.

  17. Awesome I was totally going to pass on the 300 mc gc deal to get a net of 11 staples credit but along with the 25 im getting 36 dollars(25 cash 11 staples) and 300 SPG points! I’ll take it.

  18. Hi, I have one AMEX account, however I have two card holders (Me & my wife). We both have different numbers on our cards. I synced my card awhile back with Facebook and I get all the offers straight to my account that I can add only to my card. I had my wife sync her account last week however nothing appears in my account to add deals to her card. Is this possible? Are we doing something wrong? Do I need to give it more time? Do I need to create a separate login/PW for her card (is this even possible)?
    thanks

  19. @Castian, I had a similar problem with small business Saturday. We both synced and we both spent the required money but only one of us got the $25 credit. Maybe they limit it to one per acct not on per authorized user. I did see others who claimed all synced authorized users got the credit but it was not my experience, at least lats year for small bus Saturday.
