United is having a 20% off sale for all roundtrip flights to Europe between January 13 and March 11, 2014. Typically, United prices out their flights to Europe at 60,000 miles roundtrip, so with the 20% off sale you’ll be paying 48,000 miles. While this is a great discount, it is still slightly more than a roundtrip flight to Europe on American Airlines during this time period. AA offers off-peak travel to Europe for only 40,000 roundtrip! And with AA you can book one ways to get the off-peak award pricing.
There are a few caveats to this promotion:
- Roundtrip travel is required (although you can book an open jaw)
- No stopovers allowed
- Must book United metal, partner availability will not price out at the same 48,000 miles
- Must book your award flight by November 19, 2013
With such a drastic price increase in award miles last week this might be a good time to unload your miles before the changes for into affect.
Remember, you can transfer your Chase Ultimate Reward points to United at a 1:1 ratio, but make sure there is availability prior to transferring – you cannot reverse your decision!

You keep referring to United metal. I don’t understand what metal is….
@adrienne – The airline that is operating the flight. So a flight operated by United, not a partner flight that can be booked via the United website.
