Uber Trifecta: Double Referral + Groupon + 20% off!

By now you all know what Uber is right? Here is how you can triple dip:

  • If you are new to Uber, you can currently get $20 in free credit by signing up through a referral link (typically it is $10, but through January 20, 2014 they are doubling the referral credit – for both the referrer and referee). As long as you sign up by this date, you will receive the $20 in credits.
  • Through Groupon, you can purchase $25 in Uber credit for $5, thus giving you $20 for free. This is for first time users only. This credit expires in 120 days.
  • Then you can add code NYBG20 and you will get 20% off your fare! One caveat with this is that it might only be valid in NYC. This code expires 01/26/14 03:15:52pm PST and will give you a maximum of $20 off your ride.

Steps on combining all three promotions (make sure to pay attention and follow the correct order):

  • For new Uber members, which you all must be to take advantage of promo #1 and #2, you must first sign up through a referral link from an existing member.
  • Via Groupon purchase the $25 credit for $5. As mentioned, this is is for new Uber customers only. After you signed up for an account using the referral link, enter the Groupon voucher code you receive in the “Promotions” box after signing into your Uber account. DO NOT click the Uber sign up link that is given in the voucher email from Groupon.
  • Then, again in the “Promotions” box, enter code NYBG20.

If you have no need for an Uber right now, you can always sign up through the referral link as this will guarantee you $20 in referral credits (which does not expire!) and then hold out for a better first time user promotion to come along (like the Groupon one). The $20 in free credit for a new user is pretty standard, although there are times when this can easily be $25 or $30.

Also, make sure to go through an online shopping portal when making your Groupon purchase. This will earn you extra points, miles, or cash back!

  1. For the credit available only in NYC, does that mean it won’t work for an UBER pickup at JFK that takes you out to Long Island (Nassau County)?

    • @mhenner – the terms for the NYC specific credit is not very clear so I am not sure. I know my sister has the promotion applied to her account and it did not take on her most recent ride in Boston.

  2. I’ve been having great experiences with Uber in NYC last few months. It’s usually cheaper than regular car services and could be a lifesaver from taxi hunting during rush hours. I would deeply appreciate it if anyone could use my link to sign-up.

  3. Here’s how to get $40 (instead of $20) with your new Uber account.

    1) Go to Uber to sign-up via https://uber.com/invite/ubercheer20

    2) After completing the sign-up process, this should give you an active account with $20 free credit.

    3) Once logged in, go to https://clients.uber.com/#!/promotions and add promo code KALEB in the promotion code area for an additional $20 promotional credit. You can also click on “Promotions” via your account to add this promo.

    –> Details for Promotion Code ” KALEB ” :

Description: Kaleb hooked you up with a free UberBLACK or uberX ride up to $20 for new Uber users (Valid in US only)

    Starts 08/8/13 10:49:48 AM PDT

    Expires 08/8/15 10:49:50 AM PDT

The main thing is that you have to sign up via the $20 link to get the initial $20 THEN add the $20 promo code you see above into your account right away – otherwise Uber will no longer consider you a “new customer”.

Note: Promotional codes do not increase your account balance, however they will show up under Promotions in the “active promotions” area and will be automatically applied to an eligible ride.

Following these steps will give you up to a $40 ride for free in a uberX or UberBLACK sedan.

  4. I wish zTrip would do the same thing. Their codes are harder to find but I love getting the airline miles for using their app on the airport runs.

  5. when you say “then again in the promotions box” – do you mean at the same time with a space in between them or first put in the groupon code apply & refresh & then put in the next code.

I still have the amazon local for $25 voucher can that be stacked here also?

  6. ok I see both promotionjs in my account.

Will the 20% off work together with amazon local $25 voucher & the $20 credit?

meaning say a $100 ride – take off $20 for sign up discount, then take off $25 for amazon voucher & then 20% off from $55 left over. lETS FORGET ABOUT TAXES & TIP FOR NOW.?

aLSO hOW DOES IT WORK WITH ORDERING A uber suv TO THE airport terminal when landing do you order when you land, pick up luggage etc are there waiting time charges?

  7. Thanks.

Also – say I land @ terminal 5 JetBlue JFK – Does the car know to come to terminal 5? Is the map exact – How will the car know exactly where to go in the airport?

How much would it be to queens kew Grdens around 7 miles from the airport? The fare quote link on their site does not work?
