This is part of the reader question posts that I started last week. You can view more reader questions here. Feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have a question you’d like answered.
Reader Alana recently emailed me asking:
“I’ve read that I can only get the sign up offer for an American Express credit card once in a lifetime. Is this true? Do you have any more details on it.”
As of today, most American Express credit card offer state that you are eligible for the sign up offer as long as you have not had the card open in the past 12 months. So even if you’ve received the offer before, as long as you closed the card 12+ months plus ago, you can reapply and if approved still receive the current sign up offer.
However, I have read by many reliable sources that starting soon (May 1, 2014) American Express will be limiting the sign up offer. I have not been informed of this information directly, so I cannot confirm that this is officially the ruling, but it looks like there is a good chance this is happening.
So if there is a particular card that you are looking to re-apply for, you might want to think about doing so prior to May 1st. On the other hand, if there is a card that you have yet to apply for ever, make sure to hold off applying for the card until a really really good offer comes around!
I’ll be sure to communicate the information as it comes, but for now there is no set rule for this one offer for life!
