UPDATE: This offer has expired.
Hilton’s limited time offer for the Hilton HHonors Surpass card by American Express is ending tomorrow, May 5, 2014. New applicants will receive 75,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first three months. This is probably the best offer you’ll see for the card, but keep in mind that Hilton went through a massive devaluation about a year ago and depending on where you are looking to stay, 75,000 points will probably get you about 2 free nights at a middle range hotel (although at a category 1 hotel it will get you 10 free nights).
This card comes with a $75 annual and Hilton Gold status. While Hilton Gold status is still mid-tier level (Diamond status is the best), it is actually a decent status to have when staying at a Hilton hotel – complimentary breakfast, free internet, possible upgrade and concierge floor, etc. You can read more about the perks of Hilton status here. Additionally, you will get your 5th night free on award redemptions – a perk that is only available to those with Silver, Gold, and Diamond status.
With this card you earn the following number of points:
- Hilton hotels: 12 points per dollar spent (this includes all hotels under the Hilton portfolio, i.e., Hampton Inn, Conrad, etc.)
- Gas stations: 6 points per dollar spent
- Supermarkets: 6 points per dollar spent
- All other purchases: 3 points per dollar spent
Remember, there are four different Hilton co-branded credit cards – two American Express and two Citi. The one comparable is the Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Reserve Card as it also comes with Gold status and an annual fee. The difference with this card is that the sign up bonus gives you two free weekend nights at ANY hotel that has a standard room available. Depending on where you are looking to stay, the 75,000 points with the Amex Surpass will not give you two free nights at a top hotel. Although if you are looking at very low level hotels the 75,000 points will get you more then 2 free nights. The two weekend night certificates also expire, where the 75,000 points do not.
My assumption is that the offer for the Amex Surpass card will go back down to 40,000 points after your first purchase + 20,000 points after spending $3,000 on the card within the first three months. So really this current offer is getting you 15,000 points more.
Remember, all four Hilton cards are different products so you are able to apply and get the sign up bonus for all four cards if approved.
