Hyatt is currently running a promotion where you’ll earn a 40% bonus on all points purchased. Similar to the US Airways promotion I wrote yesteday, it is a both a tiered and targeted promotion. To see if you are eligible you’ll need to sign in with your Hyatt account info. You’ll earn the following bonus:
- Purchase 5,000 to 19,000 points and receive a 20% bonus
- Purchase 20,000 to 39,000 points and receive a 30% bonus
- Purchase 40,000 to 55,000 points and receive a 40% bonus
With this promotion you can ultimately purchase a maximum of 77,000 points for a total cost of $1,320. This means you are purchasing points at 1.71 cents per point. This value is just okay and definitely not something I’d purchase on a speculative basis. For some it could be worthwhile, but only if you can get at least 1.8 cents per point when redeeming.
For example, if you are looking to stay at the Park Hyatt in the Maldives you’ll only be paying $513/night with this purchasing points promotion. A night at this hotel can easily cost close to $1,000 a night! Definitely do the math to see if purchasing points makes sense in your particular situation.
Also take into consideration Cash & Point redemptions, if available. Purchasing points and paying the “cash” portion is cheaper for category 2, 3, and 4 hotels. For the rest of the category hotels you are better off purchasing points for the entire redemption rate.
