As you may or may not know, the Southwest and AirTran merger is almost finalized and on November 1, 2014, the AirTran loyalty program will no longer exist. For the past few years or so, I have posted on some great loopholes to maximize your Southwest points by transferring points/credits back and fourth between Southwest and AirTran. Since the AirTran program will only be around for another day this means you must act fast to take advantage of some of these great tricks.

If you are a Southwest traveler, I highly recommend you read these posts that highlight AMAZING tips with maximizing your Southwest points, credits, and standard awards:

  • Convert your Southwest Credits (or Standard Awards) to Points: You can transfer your Southwest Rapid Reward credits to AirTran and on November 4, 2014, AirTran will automatically convert any AirTran credits to Southwest points (1 AirTran A+ credit = 1,200 Southwest Rapid Reward points).
  • Extend your Standard Award Free Flights: You can transfer your Standard Award to AirTran and then back to Southwest to give you another year to use the Standard Award. The steps are very easy and it will only take a few minutes. The related blog post gives you the step-by-step instructions.
  • Transfer your Southwest Points to a Standard Award Ticket: You can transfer 19,200 Southwest points to AirTran to give you 16 A+ credits. Transferring those A+ credits back to Southwest will then give you 2 one-way Standard Award tickets. The steps are pretty much the same as the above loophole, but instead of transferring credits over initially, you are transferring points.

And if you are a AirTran A+ member and wondering what is going to happen to your account you can read more about it here.

It is unclear to me whether or not AirTran A+ will be shut down November 1 or November 2 (I’ve read both dates on the AirTran and Southwest site), so in the sake of not missing out on any of the above opportunities, I HIGHLY suggest taking part in these loopholes by end of day October 31, 2014.

I am sad to see these loophole tricks shutting down tomorrow, but very happy that they’ve been around for close to two years! This has allowed me to fully maximize my Southwest awards and points to the fullest! Let me know if you have any questions!
