Using Amex Offers to Save on Travel

I wrote an intro post on Amex Offers the other days, but right now there are currently a few offers that are travel specific and will allow you to get a statement credit at hotels and airfare. Here is a compiled list of these current offers:

  • Conrad Hotels: Spend $400+, get a $75 statement credit. Expires 3/31/15
    • Tweet: #AmexConrad
    • Tip: Only valid at Conrad hotels, not other Hilton properties.
  • Marriott: Spend $200+, get a $50 statement credit. Expire 12/31/14. Related blog post.
    • Tweet: #AmexMarriott
    • Tip: Only Marriott Hotels & Resorts are included, not other brands under the Marriott chain, i.e., Marriott Courtyard, Renaissance, etc. Many people have been successful being able to purchase a gift card directly at a Marriott Hotel property. This will allow you to use the gift card at ANY Marriott chain hotel and at a later date.
  • Hyatt Place Hotels: Spend $150+, get a $50 statement credit. Expires 2/28/15.
    • Tip: This is valid at Hyatt Place only, not other hotels under the Hyatt umbrella. Purchase a gift card directly at a Hyatt Place hotel to use at a future time or at another Hyatt chain hotel.
  • DoubleTree Hotels: Spend $175+, get a $40 statement credit. Expires 2/2/15. Related blog post
    • Tweet: #AmexDoubleTree
    • Tip: Must be in a single transaction. See if any DoubleTree hotels sell Hilton gift cards. Other chains under the Hilton brand are not eligible.
  • Virgin America: Spend $250+, get a $50 statement credit. Expires 1/15/2015. Related blog post
    • Tip: You must book your flight by January 15, 2015, not actually fly by this date. The transaction must hit your account by this date, so I suggest giving your credit card a day to process the transaction.

Remember, with all the offers below your total amount spent at the hotel or airline must meet the minimum requirement. This includes all taxes and any other incidentals. For example, if you are at a Marriott hotel and a few bucks shy of the minimum amount required, buy a bottle of water and ask them to put it on the room bill. American Express just cares about the total amount spent and doesn’t know if its the room rate, food, tax, etc.

Also, try purchasing gift cards at the hotels to use at another time post the expiration date or at another chain under the same umbrella. I know people have been successful at Marriott and Hyatt Place. I’ve heard of a few accounts where people were not able to purchase a gift card at DoubleTree Hotels. Feel free to comment below with your success.

Hi what about Newegg to buy AA or Hyatt gift cards? Does that not work anymore?
