I just read on the Travel Codex blog that American Airlines has been sending out targeted emails to select members to give them the opportunity to earn American Airlines Gold, Platinum and Executive Platinum status. The emails state that between now and May 15, 2015, if they earn a certain number of elite qualifying miles or points they will receive the corresponding status through February 29, 2016.

While American Airlines has an ongoing status challenge where you can earn Gold or Platinum status (related blog post), you need to pay to enroll in it. With this current challenge opportunity it is absolutely free!

To find out if you are eligible, go to this American Airlines promotion site and enter code HV1T1. Unfortunately I am not eligible which could be due to the fact that I once was an Executive Platinum member for many years and now Gold or life. Although, my sister who has never had status isn’t eligible either. So there really is no rhyme or reason why some are targeted and others aren’t. You must register for this offer by February 11, 2015.

To qualify for the status:

  • Executive Platinum = 30,000 AAdvantage Elite Qualifying Miles or Points Required
  • Platinum = 12,000 AAdvantage Elite Qualifying Miles or Points Required
  • Gold = 6,000 AAdvantage Elite Qualifying Miles or Points Required

Congrats to those who were targeted and can complete the challenge! I personally wouldn’t go out of my way for American Airlines Gold status, but if you can get Platinum or Executive Platinum that is great!
