Hyatt Credit Card – To Apply or Not to Apply….

I am currently debating on whether or not to apply for the Hyatt co-branded credit card from Chase. The main reason is because if you have this credit card then you get a 20% rebate on ALL point stays between February 17 and July 31, 2015. I recently stayed at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek and redeemed a total of 120,000 points. This means if I had the Hyatt credit card I’d get 24,000 points back into my account which would be awesome!

Now, the main problem and the reason why I’ve been holding out on getting this card is the sign up offer. Right now the sign up offer is 2 free nights after you meet the minimum spend requirement + a $50 statement credit (related blog post detailing out how to apply for the best offer – which is better than the publicly available offer you see on Hyatt.com’s homepage. While this is great for those that have a high end stay coming up, the certificates expire 12 months after they are credited to your account and quite honestly I am not sure if I will get the best use out of them right now. Word on the street is that there is an offer out there somewhere for 50,000 points and I’d much prefer that offer. My assumption is sometime in the next year or so we will see a more public version of this offer (although no guarantee!). While 2 free nights can theoretically be valued at 60,000 points I’d prefer the flexibility of points that have no expiration date.

Although, at the the rate I am going, I’ll continue to put off applying for this this card and never reap the benefits! So maybe I just take the plunge now even if I do not get the best redemption value for the two free nights. This is a card I want to keep for awhile because of the yearly anniversary bonus where you get a free category 1-4 certificate. While the annual fee is $75, I will definitely get my moneys with the free night certificate. The card also gives Platinum status, but that status isn’t worth much.

Another pro of getting the card now is that it seems as though many of their promotions are catered around having the Hyatt credit card. While this is the first offer we’ve seen thus far that was only for folks with the credit card, offers in the past have given credit card holders a bump in the bonus offered.

So what would you do?

Any thoughts on whether I can get a (slightly different) repeat bonus from Chase? I had held the Hyatt card for a few years originally getting it to spend my free nights at the PH MIlan. I loved the card and its fantastic 1-4 freebie, so much so that I kept it open and happily paid the fee. This past year, I accidentally let my free night lapse and couldn’t get a reinstatement from Hyatt. By this time, I already had pocketed a new year’s free night, so cancelled the card and didn’t have to pay another fee. I miss this gem of a card and would consider signing up again for the 50k bonus…if I could get it. It’s only been a few months since I’ve last held the card, though, and I am not convinced that Chase/Hyatt would pony up. What do you think?

Got it. But to be clear, that means 2 years since you received any bonus, not just the offered.

Get it now, and if you don’t have a better redemption come up, use it at PH Beaver Creek instead. (I live in Denver, so that’s easy for me)

“Word on the street.” Only if it’s a street named Boarding Area Boulevard.

Let’s hold our horses. We don’t know if this was a real offer, or someone letting slip the details about a future offer that may or may not ever see the light of day, or simply an error by a Chase CSR.

IOW, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I’m holding out hoping my wife and I can both get this card for a European trip in the summer of 2016.

I am torn between Hyatt or Mariott card that currently offer increased sign up bonus of 70k from their usual 50k. The reason is because I just got Ritz card that had sign up bonus 140k back in this Jan, and want to access the Marriott Hotel and Flight package that require you to have at least 200k in your account. But on the other hand I also afraid that Hyatt’s card sign up bonus will became less attractive later in the near future. What do you think?

I’ve been doing the same “holding off.” Now I’m thinking about applying so that I can get 2 free nights in Hawaii “for the better 1/2!” She truly deserves it.
