Back in February I wrote about the Southwest devaluation that was to come April 17th. The details of the changes are vague, but if you have a point reservation you are looking to make, I suggest doing so today. Come tomorrow, a new point structure might be put in place.

The Southwest Program Update page states: “The number of Rapid Rewards Points needed to redeem for certain flights will vary based on destination, time, day of travel, demand, fare class, and other factors. However, there are still many flights which will stay at the current redemption rate.”

Southwest

I am quite annoyed that Southwest hasn’t released any other information and is keeping this from their loyal members. My assumption is that during peak times, i.e., holiday weekends, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. the number of points required for a free flight will increase. My other assumption is that international destinations will also require more points to redeem for a free flight. Of course this is not confirmed, but just my gut thinking. I even called Southwest directly and tried to get as much information out of them as possible, but had no luck.

Remember, if you make a reservation with points and the number of points required decreases at any point prior to your flight, you can get the point difference back! This will not automatically happen, but something you’ll need to keep on checking. You can learn more about it here. Since Southwest has a very generous cancelation and price match policy, no reason to not book flights for the future!

Thanks for the reminder. I remember many posts when this was first announced, but none today.
