I’ve written about the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar a few times previously. Back in October they announced that they were starting to accept reservations for June 1, 2015. Everyone got excited as it was a new Hyatt property in the Caribbean (there aren’t too many) and it was only a category 4! Originally it was slated to open December 2014, so this was already a delay for the property. Then in January they decided to open the hotel early and reservations could be made for May 1, 2015! At that time it was still pricing at a category 4, but was to go up to a category 5 just a few weeks later. Still a great deal for a brand spanking new property in the Bahamas that looked absolutely gorgeous!

Well… a few weeks ago they pushed back the opening date to mid-June. And just a few days ago pushed it back again until August 1! Yesterday I called Hyatt to make a reservation and was notified of the push back. I was then told the hotel is fully booked until October 1st! But once the hotel is up and running I truly believe it will be a great property and worth a visit.

Here are some pictures of the resort taken directly from their website:

For folks that had a reservation between now and August 1, it seems like Hyatt reservations is doing everything in their power to be accommodating. This includes:

  • Rebooking to a later date, bonus Hyatt points, and airline change reimbursement
  • Switching to another hotel with a special rate and bonus Hyatt points
  • Fully cancel the reservation and get 20,000 points per night plus reimbursement on airline fees for canceling

I do think they did a good job at trying to accommodate and fully compensate those affected. Although I am sure those that had their heart set on this hotel during the summer are less than pleased.

Now, whether or not the hotel will actually open up in August is still to be determined. I also know staying at the hotel within the first few months of it being upon is sometimes not ideal as there are typically some kinks that need to be worked out.

I took the 20k points per night which got me 60k points. I was able to rebook another property on my own luckily but I’ll take those free points!
