UPDATE: Thanks to a reader for pointing out that the Marriott T&C states that earning points through a social media promotion will not extend your points. Sorry about this!

Back in March I wrote about a new rule Marriott was putting in place – starting February 1, 2016, you will lose points if you haven’t either earned or redeemed points in the past 24 months. While keeping points should be relatively easy, if you haven’t had any activity, I suggest taking advantage of this quick and easy social media promotion to extend your points for another 24 months from today.

Screen Shot 2015-08-27 at 8.06.01 AMIf you are a Twitter or Instagram user, you can connect your Marriott Rewards account to one of these two social media platforms and you’ll earn 25 points. It is as simple as that and you won’t have to worry about activity again until August 2017. Go to this site, click “Sign Up” and select either Twitter or Instagram. Within seconds you’ll receive an email confirming your points.

Thanks to Loyalty Lobby for letting me know about this offer!

Sorry Deals, but Marriott’s ToCs are very clear on this:

“The following activities do not count toward maintaining an active status in the Marriott Rewards® program:
Gifting or transferring points
Receiving points as a gift or transfer
Earning points through social media programs, such as #MRPoints”

It would be an interesting test.

My personal favorite method for keeping my Marriott points from expiring is to go through the Marriott rewards portal to, say, Staples. You can then buy a $1 pen and ask them to hold it at the store for pickup (so you don’t get charged shipping). Stop by and pick it up and voila you’ve gotten 3-6 Marriott points and, more importantly, reset the clock.

H/T to this post where I got the idea from: http://www.solitudecanyon.com/thoughts-from-the-canyon/the-cheapest-way-to-keep-your-miles-or-points-from-expiring

If I use a Marriott VISA card, does that keep my MR points in tact in case I don’t stay at a Marriott for a while?

Doesn’t work this way. Please research before you put out “misinformation”

Just to be clear (since who knew there were so many Dannys out there), but as the person who wrote the 9:54 AM comment I wanted to make it clear that I’m not the same Danny who wrote the 10:06 one.

I connected via Twitter and got 2 emails saying “Apologies—we weren’t able to award points for your recent follow. Please visit #MRpoints FAQs to see why. Thanks, Your #MRpoints Team”

Then I connected via Instagram and got 2 more emails saying “Apologies—we weren’t able to award points for connecting your Instagram account. ”

Totally lame on their part

Yes, 9:54 Danny is a helpful contributor and 10:06 Danny is a whining loser. So, thanks 9:54 Danny, and to Jen who does a great job and throws out ideas that may or may not work. These ideas benefit us when they work even though they may sometimes irritate those inclined to complain at the drop of a hat when they don’t work.
