Small Business Saturday is Back, Sorta!

A few weeks ago I announced that Small Business Saturday is dead as we know it. For the past three years, American Express has given out statement credits by shopping at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was one of my favorite money making day! Unfortunately though, American Express did away with it this year.

BUT… There is a new Amex Offer available called “Shop Small in November” where you can receive a $10 statement credit on a $10 purchase. This is a targeted offer and you’ll need to check your AmericanExpress.com account to see if you are eligible. This statement credit is also only available 1x per eligible card. It seems to be a 50/50 chance of whether or not you’ll see the offer in your account. I received the offer 2 out of 5 cards, my husband 3 out of 3, and my mom 0 out of 3. With all other Amex Offers there doesn’t seem to by any rhyme or reason which cards are eligible.

Screen Shot 2015-11-01 at 7.01.19 AMFor those that do see this offer in their account, you can think of this as $10 in FREE money! You just need to spend $10 at a store on this Amex Shop Small map. I checked my local area and I see many small businesses participating, ranging anywhere from salons, restaurants, bakeries, liquor stores, boutique clothing stores, etc. Also, this offer is not limited to one day, but available for a purchase anytime between November 1 and November 28, 2015.

To enroll in this offer:

  • Sign into your AmericanExpress.com account and go to the “Amex Offers For You” tab. Find the “Shop Small in November” offer
  • This is a limited enrollment offer, so make sure to enroll now!

BEFORE YOU SAVE YOUR OFFER DO THIS: If this offer is available on more then one of your American Express credit cards, you’ll want to make sure to open multiple browsers before saving the offer to your card. Once you save the offer it will disappear on other cards unless you have those card accounts open on your computer. Read this post first to learn how to save an offer on multiple American Express credit cards.

Where you targeted for this offer? And if so, where will you be shopping?

I have the offer on my two credit cards, but not on my two charge cards. I’ll probably wait a couple days to see if the offer becomes more widespread and shows up on the charge cards before I add them.

In my offers I see “Picked Just for You”. I clicked “Go Now” and am taken to a map of small businesses where I can “click to save this business for later”. At the bottom you can click “Add Amex Offers Now” It returns to the offers page for that card. Not sure what the point was but maybe they’ll throw me a bone later?

Do you think an authorized user card get the “deal”? Not 4 times if I have 4 authorized users but just once if the authorized user card (different account number) makes the purchase.
