The Chase Freedom credit card comes with rotating quarterly bonus categories where you can earn 5x points on your purchase (up to $1,500 per quarter) instead of the regular 1x point per dollar spent. Since 2016 is coming to an end, Chase recently announced the 2017 Q1 and Q2 rotating categories for this card. These bonus categories will include:
January, February, and March 2017: Gas Stations and Local Commuter Transportation
This means you’ll receive 5% cash back (or 5x points if you prefer to transfer them to a premier Chase Ultimate Reward account) when filling up your gas tank and taking public transportation. For the gas station, this means purchases made at the pump and typically purchases made in-store to not apply. For local commuter transportation cash back, this includes taxis, subways, local commuter buses, and trains. You will not receive 5% cash back on parking, tolls, and Amtrak.
This quarter does not really give you many options to fully maximize if you aren’t able to spend the full amount during the quarter.
April, May, and June, 2017: Grocery Stores and Drug Stores
This means you’ll receive 5% cash back on many practical purchases! Keep in mind though doing your grocery shopping at Walmart and Target will not qualify, it needs to be an actual grocery store.
This quarter is extremely easy to maximize! Most grocery stores and drug stores sell gift cards to other merchants. So if you are not going to hit the max, just purchase gift cards to either that particular store or another store and use the gift cards whenever you so desire!
Remember, you must always activate your 5x point bonus every quarter.
