Yesterday United, today American Airlines! American is running a promotion through their online shopping portal where you can earn up to 1,000 miles by taking an extra minute and finding your online retailer through their site first. The spend to earn these miles is really low as well, so earning these miles should be relatively easy. This promotion runs through February 13, 2017. If you plan on doing $500 or more of shopping online between now and mid-February, you can actually end up with 2,000 miles – 1,000 from United and 1,000 from American!

Bonus Offer:

  • Tier 1 bonus: 500 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $125
  • Tier 2 bonus: 1,000 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $250 or more

For those not familiar with an online shopping portal, essentially you go through the shopping portal first (in this case American’s), search for your online merchant, and you’ll then be taken directly to that merchants online website. At that point, you’ll shop how you normally would as if you went to the merchants site to begin with. It literally takes an extra minute and allows you to earn points or miles on the way. The bonus described above is for cumulative spend and doesn’t need to be in a single transaction.

Enjoy your bonus points!

  1. Has anyone else have any issues lately with points not posting to your account and having to hound the portal to actually pay out? I’ve used the AA/UA shopping portals for years with no issues. The last year or so (6 orders) NONE have posted without me requesting credit and sending them all the required documentation. I always get the points in the end, but it is super frustrating. I’ve bought some big ticket items thru the portal (sonos, computes, furniture, etc) so the points have been in the thousands so it was worth my effort….but if i do a regular $50 target order it’s just not worth the effort to get the points.

I know i am accessing the portal correctly, so I know it’s not a user error…just wondering if anyone else is as unlucky as me 🙂
