A new Southwest fare sale was just announced for flights flown between Aug. 18 and Nov. 5, 2022. With this sale, you’ll receive 40% off all flights — booked with cash or points — by using promo code FALL40. This particular sale ends in just three days on June 9, 2022 so you’ll want to start locking in flights now.

The best way to get a good fare is to have some flexibility in your schedule — especially with the additional 40% off. This is great for those looking to travel at the end of the summer and through the fall.

Whenever a new Southwest fare sale is announced I ALWAYS double check flights that I’ve already booked. With Southwest, if the price does go down you can get your points back or a credit to use towards a future flight. In the past, I have personally been able to get a ton of points back on upcoming reservations and I know many readers have as well. It’s also a good opportunity to look into flights that you’ve been meaning to book.

Fare Went Down in Price?

If you already have a Southwest flight booked for a flight that decreased in price, you can get back the difference with no change fees. But, since you need to use a promotion code, you’ll have to cancel and re-book, you won’t be able to simply reprice a flight (like you normally do when a fare goes down in price).

If you end up cancelling (and re-booking), you’ll receive the difference back based on the following:

  • Paid for the flight (non-refundable fare)… You will receive a voucher for the difference in fare price to be used one year from the date the flight was originally purchased (NOT the date the change process took place). This voucher is non-transferable. The voucher will be tied to the confirmation number of the original flight. There is NO fee for this. However, if you booked a Wanna Get Away Plus fare, the voucher is fully transferrable.
  • Paid for the flight (refundable fare)… You will receive the difference in fare price back to the credit card you used to pay for the flight.
  • Booked your flight using points… The difference in points will go back into your account immediately. Again, there is NO fee for this. This is why I love booking Southwest flights using points!

My favorite thing about Southwest is if you have points, you can speculatively book flights and if you need to cancel there are no fees at all! The points just go right back into the account they were booked from. While I have no flights currently booked right now that have gone down in price, a few months ago, during a different fare sale, I was able to get over 13,000 Rapid Reward points on an upcoming flight. That is huge and worth close to $200. I’ll happily take back those extra points spent for just a few minutes of work.

Southwest Airlines Fare Sale Pricing

I was able to find incredibly low fares on many flights out of the Boston and Providence (my home airports), although it looks like there are some blackout dates and routes. For example, Columbus Day weekend isn’t working with the promotion code.

Remember, Southwest fare sales can also be combined with the Southwest Companion Pass. If you are wondering how you can fly 2-for-1 with the Southwest Companion Pass, right now all three Southwest personal cards are offering increased offers as their welcome offer. This is a huge increased offer for these three cards and the points earned even count towards qualifying for the Companion Pass. This is a great way to get a jump start on earning the pass. I’ve personally have had the Companion Pass for going on 13 years and have saved tens of thousands of dollars on travel.

Overall…

I actually found many routes offering decently low fares, so definitely do not delay. I love that I can book Southwest flights now with my points and cancel later with no fees if need be.

Anyone able to find a good flight for a future trip or get points back on an existing reservation?
