Last week I wrote a blog post reminding everyone that if the price of a JetBlue flight goes down, you can get a credit for the difference. This seemed to be extremely popular amongst my readers as many folks had no idea. One of the main questions I received was “What if I booked on points?” So here is the answer to that questions:

If you used points to book a JetBlue flight and if within 5 days the amount of points required to redeem for a free flight on the exact route decreases, you can get your points back! This works slightly different then if you booked with cash, but the rules are the same.

Rules for getting your points back

  • The flight decrease must have incurred within 5 days of booking.
  • A coupon code cannot be applied for the price decrease. For example, JetBlue sometimes runs two day sales offering 10% off point reservations if you apply code XYZ. If the price ends up being less due to the offer code, then it will not qualify for getting the difference in points back.

Process for getting your points back

  • You must call JetBlue and let them know that you booked a flight within the past 5 days and the amount of points required is now less.
  • While any representative should be able to help you, they might transfer you over to TrueBlue.
  • JetBlue will cancel your original reservation (for no fee) and then rebook you with the lower point reservation. With a paid reservation, they will keep the original reservation and just issue you a voucher for the difference.

The one thing I am not sure of is if the amount of points goes down again within 5 days if they will give you the point difference for a second time. I’ve never been lucky enough for that to happen, so do not have first hand experience.

Being able to get points back is huge since most airlines will only help you out within 24 hours of booking your flight. Getting a 5 day grace period window is very nice. If you ever book a JetBlue flight, I highly suggest tracking the cost to see if you can save some money or points!

And, if you are Mosaic, the 14 day rule wouldn’t apply as you can cancel for free…I did this last week too.

Is this policy stated anywhere on JetBlue’s website or is it just anecdotal experience?
