After a 4 year hiatus writing for the blog, my husband, otherwise known as Mr. Deals, finally wrote another blog post! Here you go folks…
Hey everyone, did you forget about me?! It’s a glorious day! After many months (2) of hard work, I have finally achieved a fantastic feat! That’s right folks, Mr. Deals has Mosaic status on Jetblue.
Now now, before you all laugh at me and stop reading because you are AA Exec Platinum for life or sitting pretty in Diamond on Delta sipping your champagne in first class, hear me out. This is a huge milestone for a traveler who prides himself on his Select Plus status on Amtrak (have you ever tried first class on a train??!?)!
Now in order to make this happen I had a few things working in my favor. First off, I had Mrs. Deals who was so kind to post about the JetBlue Mosaic Challenge over the summer. I also had a few trips lined up, NYC, ATL, NYC, FL, NYC. Now unfortunately my Amtrak Select Plus status really doesn’t hold much clout, so I wasn’t able to status match. So I was in it to win it. Knowing I would have to sacrifice some coveted Amtrak miles (from my NYC trips) and start flying only on JetBlue.
A couple downsides to this little path to status. First off, have you all flown out of the NYC airports lately? Who am I kidding, of course you have if you are reading this. I mean they are terrible. I never thought I’d say that Newark was the best of the 3 options (JFK, LGA, Newark). I mean I had a woman behind me walking down the jetway make a comment “this place just smells” as we were getting off the plane one day. I couldn’t argue with her, and I was just happy to be flying there and not into one of the other two.
A couple pro tips though if you have to fly into NYC. Newark is great after rush hour to easily get a cab to the city (it’s a pretty quick ride). JFK, use public transportation, there is just always traffic. And with all the construction going on, give yourself some time. That said I got from the Chelsea neighborhood in NYC to JFK in 45 minutes flat (give yourself an hour). And LGA is best avoided. The JetBlue terminal sucks at LGA (no different from the other airlines) and there is guaranteed to be traffic getting there (so leave 2+ hours before you need to go).
So, now that I’ve reached status, what should I do? I think my next trip to NYC might end up being on Amtrak. I mean even more space can’t compete with the Acela seats. And don’t get me started on access to the Acela Lounge (it’s actually pretty pointless).
Nonetheless, today I celebrate my Mosaic!

I disagree. What it gets you is the ability to get the lowest price between the time you booked and the time you fly. That can pay big dividends. How? Well with Mosaic there are no change or cancel fees. That means that if the price drops more than 14 days after you book (as is the B6 policy written about here), you can still take advantage of it and get a refund for the difference. If you fly a decent amount, that could save you hundreds or even thousands.
Now before folks say that yeah, while it’s technically true that you can cancel and re-book for free to take advantage of price drops, but who has time to keep checking, there is a dead simple way to automate the whole process which is detailed here:

Bottom line, B6 Mosaic status is a bit meh on the surface, but dig a little deeper, and you can potentially save some serious bucks if you employ some simple strategies.
@Jonathan – I 100% agree with you! Not only does it allow you to get a credit or points back if the price/points drop, it also allows you to easily cancel a flight if you need to and not have to pay a hefty cancellation fee. Now that I have 2 little ones, my chances of having to cancel a flight are much higher then it used to be!
