United is running a promotion where if you transfer points from a hotel loyalty program to United you’ll receive a 30% bonus. This promotion runs through November 30, 2017 and applies to many hotel transfers: Marriott Rewards, Hilton Honors, Starwood Preferred Guest, IHG Rewards Club, Club Carlson, World of Hyatt, Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, Golden Circle, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards.

However, Starwood has a pretty awful transfer ratio to United where 2 United points = 1 SPG points (almost all other transfer rates are 1:1 when it comes to SPG and partner airline programs). That means Marriott is your best option or if you are looking to get rid of some orphaned points in another program and you’d prefer them in your United account.

Marriott Transfer to United

The best transfer is for Marriott’s Hotel + Air packages where you receive a certain number of miles based on the package selected. Not only that, United already has a special partnership with Marriott where you are receiving an additional 10% bonus on points transferred compared to transferring to other airlines.

So if you are looking to redeem for the 7 Nights + 132,000 Miles for a category 1-5 package (when using the Hotel + Air package for other airlines you’ll only receive 120,000 miles), and while they are offering a 30% bonus on those miles transferred over, you are unfortunately capped at 25,000 miles for this promotion. So instead of earning an additional 39,600 miles, you are only getting an additional 25,000 miles – so not even close to a 30% bonus. Or, you could opt to transfer at one of the lower level bonuses such as 7 Nights + 77,000 miles, which will max out the 30% bonus. It all depends on how many United miles you are looking to earn and the number of Marriott points you are looking to “get rid of.”

Overall… a nice promotion for those that are looking to increase their airline miles and get a better value with their Marriott points.

Thanks to The Frequent Miler for letting me know about this promotion!

I converted 300000 and Received 7 nites certificate plus 132000 united miles but not the 25000 bonus. CSR said I have to complete the stay before the 25000 bonus is posted. Is this right?
