A Silver Lining to the Marriott Re-categorization – Some New Category 5 Properties

Last week I wrote about some major changes with Marriott’s annual re-categorization of hotel properties. Unfortunately, way more properties are going up a category then go down and the changes are overall negative. Surprise, surprise!

While we can all dwell on the negative changes, I am trying to look at the silver lining here. There actually are some properties that were once a category 6 hotel that are going down to a category 5. The significance is that once the category changes officially take place, you’ll be able to use your credit card free night certificate and free nights earned from MegaBonus properties at those properties. Free night certificates are only available for category 1-5 properties, so new category 5 properties actually might be good for you. Hopefully!

While you can check out all the hotels changes categories here, here is a list of properties moving down from a category 6 to a category 5:

There is now a hotel in close proximity to Disneyland that is a category 5! As of right now, all the ones within a mile are a category 6 or more. Of course there are category 5 hotels or below 12+ minutes away, so by no means far, but this makes getting to the gates of Disney walkable! I am heading there in April so once March 6th hits, I’ll be switiching my reservation to this hotel. So while it was an overall negative change, this is actually a positive change for my personal needs in the near future!
