Post #8 compliments of Mr. Deals…

Wow, I’ve really been slacking on my blog posting while on vacation. My apologies everyone! This is my second post from our vacation in Thailand. We’ve been cruising around to different parts of the country and enjoying some really cool culture, food and experiences. Flying throughout the country is really easy and cheap. For about $50-$100 you can get a flight anywhere on one of the local air carriers. Asia has a bunch of airlines that you won’t find in North America so you can forget about points and rewards (unless you are coming here really often). No OneWorld Points for Mrs. Deals!

Since we’ve been in Thailand, we’ve flown a couple of different airlines: Air Asia twice and Nok Air. I guess you could say Air Asia and Nok Air are similar to the low cost carriers in the U.S. like JetBlue and Southwest, except even less frills. You must check all luggage over 7kg (for a fee), no complimentary soft drinks or water, and extra processing and seat selection fees.

While this is a bummer, I must say it is kind of funny to see Mrs. Deals helpless when a flight issue arises. For example, our flight on Nok Air from Chiang Mai to Bangkok was delayed about two hours. Weird, because it certainty didn’t look like a weather issue unless temps over 80 degrees and clear skies makes it harder to fly. No big deal as we were taking an evening flight and got a full days worth of activity. Apparently it is common for domestic evening flights to get delayed in Thailand. We found out at the airport and Mrs. Deals first thought was “damn, if this was in the U.S. I’d be writing a letter and getting points out of this!” Ha, I am not so sure a letter is going to do her any good but as it turns out, she’s already scheming about what she’s going to write. It’s a good thing there’s a big language barrier, otherwise she’d be on the phone with their customer service trying to figure out some way of getting a flight credit. I’ll let everyone know how that letter turns out.

By the way, if you are ever flying Nok Airlines make sure to bring some earplugs. They play music during landing that sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks meets “It’s a Small World” ride from Disney. It’s brutal.

Alright, back to vacation. Next post I’ll tell you about how Mrs. Deals splurges while on vacation!

I’ve have flow both Nok Air and Air Aaia. I like Nok Air and recently discovered Bangkok Airways – bangkokair.com similarly priced but with much better service to many in country destinations as well as some international routes (Maldives, Hong Kong, Seim Reap etc).

They also have a FF program if you absolutely must collect points! 🙂
