Weekly Getaway Day 13: Purchase Hilton Points for $0.00495 per Point

Today’s Daily Getaway promotion is the sale of Hilton HHonor points at a highly reduced price. Unlike the Wyndham promotion (which was amazing for anyone!), this offer may or may not be a good deal depending on your travel needs. There are three different offers available and will ultimately cost you $0.00495 when using an American Express card (or $0.0055 per point without an amex – although you really though have one)! Remember, this offer goes on sale at 1pm EST sharp and since availability is extremely limited they will probably sell out quick. If you are not able to get them this time around, the same offer is going on sale next week so you have another chance.

Before making your purchase, take a look at the hotel cost on the dates you are traveling and the category for redeeming points. If the cost of the hotel is higher than the prices listed out below, then it is a good buy. Also remember, when using points there are no additional taxes, so take that into consideration, but again remember that you don’t earn points or bonuses when using points. You do however earn nights/stays towards status when redeeming for a free night though.

Through this offer, you will essentially be paying the following for a free night at each category (all prices are listed as the discounted price by using an Amex card):

  • Category 1 = 7,500 points – $37.13
  • Category 2 = 12,500 points – $61.88
  • Category 3 = 25,000 points – $123.75
  • Category 4 = 30,000 points – 148.50
  • Category 5 = 35,000 points – $173.25
  • Category 6 = 40,000 points – $198.00
  • Category 7 = 50,000 points – $247.50
  • Waldorf Astoria 50,000-60,000 points – $247.50-$297.00

Just keep in mind that this analysis does not take into consideration point saver or VIP discounts, which could decrease the amount of points needed for each free night stay.

From a practical standpoint, all category 1 hotels will be worth it – trying to find a hotel that is less than $40/night is probably near impossible. Category 2 hotels will most likely be a good value as ell. Category 4 and 5 hotels will really depend on where you are staying. Category 6, 7, and Waldorf Astoria hotels could provide you some great value, but again will depend on your redemption – a stay in the Maldives or in Europe could absolutely provide some value, while a stay in Boston might not make sense.

I personally will be sitting out on this promotion where I have no Hilton stays in the near future and with year devaluation I’d hate to per-purchase points, that may or may not be worth it, with no redemption in mind.

Will anyone be jumping on this offer?

  1. Do you know if you have to pay taxes on a night when you use points? If not, i think the points would be a great deal for cities with very high tax rates like London, San Juan etc.

    • @Vivek – No you do not pay taxes when using points. However, if there is a resort fee, you still will need to pay that fee (although some hotels do not charge when redeeming points).

  2. I think you have this one backwards

    100,000 Hilton HHonors™ Bonus Points (80 available)

    Cost with amex = $550
    Cost without amex = $495

  3. i am sitting this one out as well due to already having a ton of hilton points. however, under the right conditions this would be worthwhile
