5,000 American Express Points by Extending Your Payments

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners, such as American Express. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here. Additionally, some of the offers on this page may no longer be available through Deals We Like.

UPDATE: This offer has expired.

American Express is offering up 5,000 FREE bonus points by enrolling in their extended payment option. This option is available only for the American Express Business Gold Rewards credit card. American Express has extended this offer to run through May 31, 2014 (originally it was March 31, 2013) – however, the updated T&C states that you MUST have received this offer directly through American Express.

How this works:

  • Enroll in the extended payment option by May 31, 2014 (bonus ID: A3V4)
  • Once enrolled, you will decide whether to pay your bill in full, pay the minimum due, or anything in between (for charges over $100)

Some things to know:

  • Any charge that would result in an account balance of $35,000 or more will not be eligible for extended payment
  • Enrollment is fee-free
  • Incur no interest charges if you pay the new balance by the payment due date each month

I will actually be enrolling Mr. Deals up for this promotion as he has this credit card – I’ll take 5k free points any day! We actually will not use the extended pay option as we pay our credit cards in full always, but to earn the bonus points it doesn’t really matter how you actually pay, just that you enroll.

How to determine APR: The Annual Percentage Rate (“APR”) for the Extended Payment Option may vary and is determined for each billing period by adding 14.99% to the Prime Rate. The APR is 18.24% with a Daily Periodic Rate (“DPR”) of 0.0500%. A Penalty APR may be applied if you make late payments or your payment is returned unpaid. The Penalty APR may vary and is determined by adding the Prime Rate +23.99%. The Penalty APR is 27.24%, with a DPR of 0.0746%. If the Penalty APR is applied, it will apply for a minimum of 12 consecutive billing periods. The variable rates above are accurate as of 07/23/2012. We will not charge interest on Extended Payment Option charges if you pay the Account Total New Balance by the due date each month. Please refer to your Cardmember Agreement for all other terms and conditions governing the use of Pay Over Time features.

Terms & Conditions: The outstanding balances of Pay Over Time features may not exceed $35,000, unless we notify you otherwise. Consequently, any Charges that would cause your Pay Over Time features balances to exceed that amount will be due in full. Please note, new Charges may be ineligible for extended payment even if they would not cause your Pay Over Time features balances to exceed $35,000.

To be eligible to earn 5,000 Membership Rewards® points you must enroll in the Extended Payment Option (EXPO) by 5/31/2014, and be enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program at the time of EXPO enrollment. 5,000 points will be credited to your Membership Rewards® account 6 to 8 weeks after enrollment in EXPO. You will not be eligible for this 5,000 points offer if you were previously enrolled in EXPO, if you are currently enrolled in EXPO, if you were previously suspended from EXPO, or if we receive your application for EXPO enrollment after 5/31/2014. Bonus ID A3V4. Offer only available to Cardmembers who have received a communication directly from American Express for this offer.

    • @Andyandy – signing up for the extended pay option should not, but I will find out 100% and get back to you.

  1. I signed up for the extended payment option with my Premier Rewards Gold card the last time Amex ran this promotion about 3 months ago. The offer was for 10k MR and it was good for any of their charge cards. There wasn’t a hard pull. The points didn’t post automatically though. It took two months and three long phone calls but I did eventually get the points. Make sure you take a screenshot of the offer and bonus ID. I’ll never use the extended pay option but free points are free points.

  2. I signed up before and nothing ever posted (totally forgot about it). Then two days ago I just happened to see the banner on Amex for this promotion and signed up again, and today (2 days later) I got 5K points for each of my Amex business cards. I wish I had more than 2 cards!

  3. Same on my Premier Rewards Gold. I waited out the 6-8 wks stated on the TC, but no points. I then sent AMX a secure email, and was told that they couldn’t find the promo on my account. But they created a trouble ticket to investigate, 10k showed up 3 days later. I registered 5k for my Gold Biz now. Need follow up with them in Oct. Thanks for the tip. Free points without hard pull, which is the best.

  4. first . THANK YOU. 2nd i just signed up for it and it didn’t ask me anywhere to enter the promo code will i get it anyways?
P.S. keep up your great work

  6. Saw this offer on a banner after logging into Amex’s manage my account. Points posted about 5 days later. Also got a letter in the mail confirming enrollment.

  7. Can someone please tell me where am I supposed to see this banner that everyone is taking about? I don’t see it even after logging onto my account.

  8. Thanks – I used your link and it took just a few days to get the points on my wife’s Amex Business Gold and my Amex Business Platinum.

  9. My husband just got the Amex Express Bus Gold (when the 75000 Miles Bonus was offered). We he activated the card, the rep asked if he wanted to sign up for the extended payment option. He said sure. We also pay our cards off each month. The 5000 points was offered shortly after we got our cards. Do you think there is a chance we can get the bump?

    • @kathy – It absolutely does not hurt to send a secure message and inquire. Mention that you are a loyal Amex customer, etc. Let me know how it goes.

  10. After two follow up phone calls, they DID give me the 5000 points and they were credited to me. Also, I have received my 75,000 points for reaching my minimum spend. Yay! Now, if they would just have some sort of bonus for transferring points to Delta, I would be even more thrilled! Love it when I get my way. 🙂

  11. Hi-

I was approved & got my points within a week.

My wife was approved for the EXPO using the link but the points have not posted & it has been over 3 weeks???
