With every Avis car rental through August 31st, you are able to earn an incredible amount of American Airline AAdvantage miles.

  • Rentals of 1-2 days: 3,000 bonus miles
  • Rentals of 3+ days: 5,000 bonus miles

This is an awesome deal and a great way to earn some American miles. Now, this probably goes without saying, but if you have the time and are willing to put in the effort you can do even better. Have a 2 day rental? Well instead of one 2-day rental, go for two 1-day rentals. Yes, this will require you to go back and forth to the car rental place, but depending on your need, it may be worth it. Blogger Mommy Points even presented some cheap rentals at Houston Hobby Airport for around $19/day (after tax). So even if you do not really need a rental, you might find it worthwhile to rent a car just for the miles.

How to make the reservation and take advantage of the promotion:

  • Go to the avis website (or go through the online shopping portal for 5.5% cash back)
  • Use coupon code MUAA035
  • You can also try using AWD number K817165 to see if that saves you anything on your rental (or use another AWD number that you find!)

Things to know about earning miles with Avis:

  • You will only earn miles at participating Avis airport location in the US and Canada
  • You are not able to earn miles with many corporate AWD rates
  • You must give your AA number when making your reservation (or at the rental counter, but not sure I’d trust this)
  • There is a slight surcharge of about $0.75/day when earning miles
  • Miles take 6-8 weeks to post
  • Cannot be combined with any other coupon or promotion – for example, you can only select the free night rental/upgrade or the bonus miles, not both!

  1. I made my reservation with my corporate AWD and it accepted the coupon code, does this mean I will get my 5000 points? If not I am paying $20 more to go trhough Avis than Budget so if there are not points than I need to change back.

    • @Tracy – As others have mentioned, some corporate AWD do not give out miles, so check with Avis and Budget to see if yours qualifies.

  2. The surtax is way more than $0.75 per day. It amounts to about $4 to $8 for 4 day trip because of the 7.5% excise tax on the 5000 miles.

Still good but a pity the Feds get their share of something like that.

  3. @Tracy: No this does not mean you will get the miles. You can either check on the receipt once the rental in complete or call Avis customer service and check if a particular AWD will earn miles.

  4. FWIW, I did two one-day rentals out of CLE. The 3k miles from my first trip posted within 5 days. However the second one still hasn’t posted so I’ll give it some time but I’m worried they won’t give it to me as these rentals were back to back.

  5. @DWL. I have few quick questions:
    1. Can I rent multiple cars on the same day from Avis on my name? Let’s say if I rent 5 cars would I earn 3kx5 miles ?
    2. If above if not true is it possible to rent back to back for 2 days and earn 6k miles?
    3. Is there any fuel surcharge if you drive let’s say only 10 miles, but refill the gas and give them

    • @murtuza –

      1. Would you be renting from the same location? Not sure the facility will allow you to do this.
      2. Yes you should be able to rent back to back.
      3. As long as you refill the gas there are no fuel surcharges.

  6. Can we rent multiple cars in 1 day and do we have to “drive” the car out of the parking lot to earn the miles? Or can I just pick up and drop off immediately for multiple cars?
