Amex Sync: Spend $79 at Walmart, Get $20 Back

This post may contain affiliate links from our advertising partners, such as American Express. Read my Advertiser Disclosure policy here. Additionally, some of the offers on this page may no longer be available through Deals We Like.

UPDATE: From reader comments this is a targeted promotion, however, some readers have emailed me saying they were able to call Amex and have the representative manually add the promotion to their card. I personally had this offer show up for my Starwood Amex card.

By syncing your American Express card, you can get a $20 statement credit with a $79+ purchase at Currently you can register for this promotion by going to your American Express account and registering for this promotion via the “Offers for You” tab. Currently, there is no hashtag to register through Twitter.

This is a one-time statement credit and is valid through December 31, 2013. Purchasing a $79 gift card will trigger the statement credit (for Walmart gift cards you do not need to purchase in a certain increment amount, you are actually able to purchase a $79 gift card!). There are also a slew of other store’s gift cards for sale on so if you do not frequently shop at Walmart, you can still take part in this deal for another retailer. They also sell Visa and MasterCard gift cards, although those do come with a $3.95 fee for a $50 card – while I hate the fees, this still comes out to be a money maker if you’d prefer the straight cash!

If you read this blog often, you know that I absolutely love the American Express Sync concept and have received a bunch of statement credits due to making purchases with a registered Amex credit card. Remember, these promotions are only valuable to those with an American Express card (non-Corporate or prepaid cards) and is only a one-time statement credit. If you have multiple Amex cards, you will need to sync them to different accounts.

  1. Thanks. I got it (and it wasn’t there 2 days ago).

Valid online only. In store transactions are excluded. Enrollment limited. Offer is non-transferable. Not valid on gift card reloads and prepaid cards.

  2. The offer showed up under one of my cards and not the others. The offer excludes prepaid cards, so I don’t think it applies to the VISA or MC gift cards work since these show up as prepaid cards under the Walmart’s search function. Just wondering whether anyone can confirm they received the credit for other gift cards?

  3. I registered for this promotion on American Express website in the offers tab and then purchased two Outback restaurant gift cards, a Cold Stone Creamery gift card and a WalMart gift card. I received a confirmation email from AmEx that I utilized the promotion successfully within about 5 mins. I use the SPG AmEx personal card.

  4. Can someone explain what is gift card reloads? Is walmart gift card or anyother gift cards considered a prepaid gift card? Thanks!

  5. Hi Carey, was your total more than $79 without the purchase of the WalMart Gift Card? I’m trying to figure out if WalMart Gift cards are considered reload gift cards. Thanks!

  6. Thanks! I was not targeted for this offer so I called Amex and they said they were unable to add this offer but they quickly offered me 500 starwood points as an apology so definitely worth taking the 2minutes to call them and check

  7. I tried calling in but they said they could not add it because it’s targeted. The CSR definitely took some time to look it up so it wasn’t just a flat-out “no”. Anyway, I have doubts that other people were able to call in and get it added. Either you’re “targeted” or not.

    • @Thousand – I personally have not tried it. It all comes down to how it is billed. Do you get billed from or Walmart. I suggest just purchasing a gift card online and then using that gift card to purchase the item.
