A Few Miles Shy of Delta Status?

As the end of the year is quickly approaching, many are wondering how they can reach their status milestone without having to step fly those extra miles. Delta is giving you the opportunity to purchase qualifying miles towards status.

Through December 31, 2013 you can purchase between 2,500 and 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) that will post to you 2013 MQM balance and apply towards your 2014 status. Your purchase is nonrefundable so make sure you actually need the MQMs prior to making the investment. The cost will depend on your current status, so you might see a different price tag than someone else. You will need to enter your account information here to see the options available. I personally have not taken a single Delta flight this year and have no interest in purchasing up to Silver status. My account is actually not even eligible to purchase MQMs.

While this can cost you +/- $1,000, there are some that might think it is well worth it. I suggest plotting out how much you’ll actually fly Delta next year and determine if the benefits outweigh the cost. You can see the benefits of each status here.

If you are really in need of Delta MQMs you might want to consider one of the Delta SkyMiles co-branded credit cards as there are opportunities for earn MQMs for signing up for the card.

  1. Thanks for this post. I did it last year as I was very close to Diamond and buying MQMs did the trick. This year, I’m 24k away from Diamond so buying won’t make sense. I guess I’ll settle for Platinum and take the rollover. The Diamond perks are pretty sweet this round including a new upgrade certificate structure that’s more forgiving for low fare class tix as well as complimentary Global Entry.
Now that we moved to NJ, Delta is not so great at EWR. Every flight requires connecting thru a hub. Gotta think about doing a challenge with United.
