Southwest Airlines just launched a promotion for shopping through their online shopping portal where you can get up to 1,000 bonus points. This is a tiered promotion:

  • Spend $100, earn 250 bonus points
  • Spend $200, earn 500 bonus points
  • Spend $400, earn 1,000 bonus points

This is on top of the regular points you earn for all your purchases. So let’s say you make a $400 purchase at Macy’s, you will earn 2 points per dollar spent (800 points) plus the bonus 1,000 points for a total of 1,800 points. If you were going to make the purchase anyways and Southwest is your airline of choice, then this is a decent bonus. However, the AAdvantage Shopping portal has a much better promotion going on where all you have to do is spend $250 and you’ll earn 3,000 bonus miles (although many folks hate the AAdvantage shopping portal as miles do not always post).

This promotion ends January 5, 2014. This also doesn’t need to be a single purchase os $100+, $200+, or $400+, t is your cumulative spend through the Southwest Shopping portal for the length of the promotion (until January 5, 2014).

Some of the top current payouts through the portal (as of 12/19/13) include: JC Penny – 8 points per dollar spent, eBags – 12 points per dollar spent, – 7 points per dollar spent, Neiman Marcus – 5 points per dollar spent.

  1. Aren’t all the shopping portals run by Cartera? Certainly Frequent Miler has said flat out that Southwest Airlines shopping portal is run by Cartera just like American Airlines. So I would expect that any tar and feathering of the AAdvantage Shopping portal would apply just as well to any of the other portals, Southwest included.
