Do Purchasing Southwest Points Count Towards the Companion Pass?

This is part of the reader question series that I started earlier this year – you can view more reader questions here. Feel free to email me at if you have a question you’d like answered in a full on post.

Reader Nathan and Regan recently commented on my post which talked about the current 25% discount when purchasing Southwest points:

“I think WN points count toward the companion pass, so that could be a good value here too.” and “Does it count towards companion pass?”

And unfortunately the answer is no. Purchasing points do not count towards the points needed to earn the companion pass. If they did it would be too good to be true! However, purchasing hotel points and transferring them to Southwest do count towards the companion pass. The only issue is that is it is expensive and you lose value during the transfer, so hardly a good option. Although if you are not too many points away it might make sense.
