Amex Daily Getaways: Purchase Hertz Points at a Discount

Tomorrow’s Daily Getaway promotion (Week 1, Day 2) is offering the opportunity to purchase Hertz points at a discount. This deal is the same as last year and unfortunately the availability is still extremely limited.

5,500 Hertz Gold Plus Rewards®

  • Cost: $280 ($252 with Amex card)
  • Availability: 45
  • Deal: 5,500 points which means each point costs 5.1 cents per point (or 4.59 cents per point with Amex card)

13,200 Hertz Gold Plus Rewards®

  • Cost: $475 ($427.50 with Amex card)
  • Availability: 35
  • Deal: 13,200 points which means each point costs 4.6 cents per point (or 4.14 cents per point with Amex card)

16,500 Hertz Gold Plus Rewards®

  • Cost: $775 ($697.50 with Amex card)
  • Availability: 50
  • Deal: 16,500 points which means each point costs 4.7 cents per point (4.23 cents per point with Amex card)

While these packages can be a good value the quantities are extremely limited making this deal close to pointless. There will be way more then 130 people looking to purchase this deal! I personally am not even going to waste my time with this one, but for those first 130 people purchasing these packages will most likely be a cost savings for the future.

For example, a free one day weekend rental typically requires 550 points. You can look at the awards chart here. By purchasing points through this sale, that one day rental will essentially cost you about $25 (based on being able to purchase points at the cheaper rate and using an American Express card to buy the package). If you can typically get a car rental for less than this, then this is not the deal for you. If you are looking at renting a car in an expensive location or time period, then this can work out – think about ski vacations or during the holiday time. Also, with multiple day rentals the cost per day goes down as you get a little break. This is for a standard reservation only, and for an “anytime” reservation if there is a blackout date or a peak time period, the cost to redeem the points is double.

Before purchasing the points, you must have a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards member number. If you’re not already a member, you can sign up here. Hertz points do not expire, however, you must keep your account activate every 24 months.

This deal will go on sale at 1pm EST TOMORROW Tuesday May 20th. As I mentioned above, these packages will sell out within a second. While I will not be wasting my time due to the limited packages, if you want to test your luck I suggest getting your computer out a few minutes prior and continuously refreshing your browser. Also remember, like all other Daily Getaway promotions, you’ll receive 10% off the purchase price if you use any American Express credit card – so get your Amex card ready!

  1. As a frequent traveler who likes one-way car rentals, I can NEVER NEVER find a Hertz one-way rental where I can use Hertz points. To me, this would be the greatest use of Hertz points, but I am never able to find availability because there seem to be very few locations that will book one-way rentals with Hertz points.

On a side note, I love to travel by train but don’t have much time to travel. I like to fly into a city, take a train to another place, and then fly back to my original location. The biggest problem I have is that one-way rental from the airport to downtown (where the train usually is). This is a consistent problem I’ve been having my with particular travel patterns–also, why are car rentals places upon 9-12 on Saturday and CLOSED on Sunday?

  2. Nice job trying to get people to not try for these so you have a better chance. 🙂 I got one of these two years ago, and the Mirage deal of which there were only 6 last year. I did manage to use the Hertz points on a one-way rental, from Seattle to Santa Barbara.

    • @Alan – haha! I’ll actually be at a music class for my 1 year old tomorrow at 1pm so I won’t even be trying to purchase this deal! But, goodluck!
