Southwest is having a 72-hour sale with fares starting at $49, $99, $129, or $149 one-way. Typically with these Southwest sales, the further the distance, the more expensive the flight.

Southwest runs these types of offers a few times a year, but unfortunately the past few times have been at a “starting at” price, not a fixed price like it used to be. There are some exclusions from this sale, such as all Fridays and Sundays, to/from Richmond, VA, and blackout dates of September 1 and November 21-December 2. Additionally, if you are looking to travel to/from Florida and Nevada: Travel to Florida is Nevada is valid Sunday through Wednesday, travel from Florida or Nevada is valid Tuesday through Friday, and travel between the two cities is only valid on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

This sale is for travel August 25 through December 17, 2014. You must book your flight by this Thursday (June 5, 2014).

Now, the best thing about these Southwest Airline sales is that many airlines seem to match, so be on the look out. Typically those fare matches do not start till later in the day or tomorrow morning (if there is a match at out). I’ll keep my eyes out and be sure to report back if I start to see anything.

Remember, if you already have a Southwest flight already booked for this time period, it is worth looking into to see if the price has gone down:

  • For paid flights, you will receive a voucher for the difference to be used one year from the date the flight was purchased. This voucher is non-transferable.
  • For flights booked with points, the difference in points will go back into your account. You can re-book your original flight online to get this voucher/point difference credited – no phone call is needed.

While Southwest sales are not as good as they used to be, you might find a good deal. You can check out the terms and book here.
