About a week ago a new Amex Sync offer appeared – spend $50 at a grocery store and get a $10 statement credit. Since I am in NYC, my offer said it was limited to those in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Originally I wasn’t going to write about it since it was so targeted, but I had a few readers asking me about it, so I figured I’d make sure those eligible are aware of this great promotion. Additionally, a reader emailed me to let me know that there offer specified supermarkets in California, so it looks like there are a few targeted promos out there. UPDATE: It looks like this offer is targeted to those in Florida as well.Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 8.07.09 AMEssentially, through July 14, 2014, if you spend $50 with your synced American Express card in-store at a supermarket, you’ll get a $10 statement credit. And the best part of this promotion is that you can take advantage of it 3 times! So ultimately $30 in free groceries! Since I do not always spend $50 on each grocery trip, I personally purchased 3 $50 gift cards at my local grocery store (Fairway). I can then use those gift cards for future purchases so I do not have to worry about the $50 minimum and I can use them post July 14th. I purchased these gift cards last week and already have been credited the statement credit three times. From the terms, a “Supermarket” means:

“A store who primary business comes from the sale of a variety of foods such as meat, fresh produce, dairy, canned and packaged goods, but also sells items such as household products, pharmacy products and pet supplies. The following are NOT considered supermarkets: specialty food stores, small grocery stores, gourmet shops, convenience stores, drug stores, natural food stores and superstores including warehouse clubs, big box stores, and hypermarkets.”

So while I did not personally attempt any of the excluded list, it looks like Costco, CVS, etc. will not trigger the statement credit. For those in NYC I’d also caution you with those speciality stores, bodega’s, etc. If you have already received a statement credit, feel free to post the store where you had success. From the accounts I checked, it seems like this offer will only appear on one of your American Express credit cards. For me and my family members, it was the one we primarily use. This offer is not available via Twitter, but you must go into your account, go to the “American Express Offers for You” tab, and then click “Save Offer”. You can read more about the steps to do this in this prior post. To learn more about these American Express Sync promotions, read this Amex Sync series:

  1. […] Amex is offering a promotion for $10 off $50 of purchases in grocery stores by just registering your Amex card (or cards for the promotion). Through July 14, 2014, if you spend $50 with your synced American Express card in-store at a supermarket, you’ll get a $10 statement credit. You can apparently register multiple Amex cards and can take advantage of the promotion on each Amex card 3 times. So that’s $30 in free groceries per card! Check out Deals We Like on the details and how to register for the promotion.  […]

  1. @Chris. I haven’t tried using my synced card at Fresh Direct but imo, the T&Cs exclusion of “online purchases” is enough to stop me from using it there. Would love to be proven wrong!
