UPDATE: The 50,000 miles limited time offer sign up bonus has expired. The offer for Lufthansa Premier Miles & More WorldCard is now 20,000 miles after your purchase purchase and payment of the $79 annual fee.

While this is an international credit card, you can actually use the points earned on any Star Alliance partner, including United. This is definitely not a card for everyone, but for those looking to earn more miles, this might be a good opportunity for you.

  • Premier Miles & More® World MasterCard® – The offer allows you to earn 20,000 miles after your first purchase and paying the $79 annual fee.

The major downfall of this credit card is that some of the international routes come with hefty fuel surcharges. Fortunately, as mentioned before, you can use the miles earned on domestic United flights and not be hit with those fees!

So here are the number of miles required for domestic flights:

  1. Economy class on United: This will require 25,000 miles. While this is the same amount of miles if you were to redeem United miles, if you typically like to use your points for domestic flights, this could be a good opportunity. If you want to fly to Hawaii, it will cost you 40,000 miles roundtrip.
  2. Business class on United: For only 10,000 more miles then an economy redemption, you can actually fly business class on a domestic United flight. Roundtrip it will require 35,000 miles. With the Miles & More program, you can redeem half the number of miles for a one-way flight also. To redeem for a business class flight using United miles will actually cost you 50,000 miles roundtrip!

So the miles earned from the sign up bonus will get you you almost 2 one-way economy class ticket, almost 1 one-way business class ticket, and 1 one-way economy class tickets to Hawaii, etc. Just remember though that there is a $79 annual fee, so earning these points will not be free, but pretty inexpensive in my opinion.

Of course you can use your miles on international flights and if you need more Miles & More miles, you can always transfer the amount needed from Starwood as they transfer at a 1:1 ratio. For those looking at this card for international usage, I only recommend it for more seasoned points and miles aficionados.

One big thing to note: All miles earned from this credit card are deposited into your Lufthansa Miles & More account. All miles expire 36 months after they are earned, regardless of how you got them. So if you were to apply for the card now, the miles will expire in about 3 years. As of right now, there is no way to extend the expiration date.
