Chase Freedom: 2015 Categories Announced

The Chase Freedom credit card comes with rotating quarterly bonus categories where you can earn 5x points on your purchase (up to $1,500 per quarter) instead of the regular 1x point per dollar spent.

Since 2014 is coming to an end, Chase recently announced the 2015 Q1 rotating categories for the Chase Freedom card. These bonus categories will include:

Grocery stores
Movie theaters
Starbucks

This is quite different then the first quarter of 2014, where instead of grocery stores, the 5x category was gas stations. Both categories are great in my opinion though as you can easily spend $1,500 within three months. At grocery stores, you can typically purchase gift cards for that store or other merchants so maximize your cash back and then use the gift card throughout the year.

So if you spend $1,500 during Q1 at a grocery store, for example, that will give you 7,500 points. You can either redeem those Chase points for $75 cash back, or if you have a premier Chase Ultimate Rewards credit card (Chase Ink Bold, Chase Ink Plus, Chase Sapphire Preferred) transfer the points to one of those accounts and then either use them at the Chase travel portal or transfer them to a partner loyalty program.

Chase also gave a preview of what the entire 2015 quarterly bonuses will look like, although not all categories are listed.

Remember, you must always activate your 5x point bonus every quarter.
